I think your best bet would be Ebay at the moment. If there's none for auction then you'll have to wait and check again later.

so you wanna upgrade your laptop with this card? you know you can get laptops that are more powerful (with an x700-6800go) for around 800-900 euros. i don't think it's worth upgrading to a 9800 now.

EDIT: or does unlocked mean 16pipes? that would make my above comment useless

to a lot of people 800-900 doesnt seem like a lot at all.
But for a student who is doing his A levels its a fortune. So i can afford to spend money on a new gcard , rather then buying a whole new laptop.

I would ofcourse love the 16 pipe version .... but i think thats to rare .
I am going to try and find a 12 pipe version or the original one . All of the 9800 are quite rare in europe

I spent a lot of time trying to find the right 9800 upgrade... It ended up not being worth it. Dell wanted to charge me $450 and unlocked cards on ebay were going for $500.

I ended up going for a new system... but it was a stretch for me. If I was you I'd save that $300 for something new in the future.

I'm gonna wait till Vista has been out for a while for my new laptop. Until then my 9100 will have to do.

I suckered dell into giving me the card for free the week they released it! . The performance difference is still worth it if you are financially challenged like myself.

With the 9800, the Vista beta I have runs faster than windows XP ever did.

Oh... GET THE 2 GIG RAM UPGRADE!!! sorry... didnt mean to yell. Your laptop WILL perform better all around. My second gig chip should be here today and I have been running on 1.5GB all weekend (as compared to 1GB) and the extra 512MB has made the laptop much more "snappy". The chips are cheap on ebay as I only spent $170.00 (about 93 GBP) for a new matched set.

Whack is right on! 2 gigs makes a load of difference when paired up with the 9800. Oblivion doesn't seem to care for the 9800 too much, and is simply bringing my system to it's knees, but if you're a gamer, or just base systems on gaming requirements alone, this machine will still keep 'ya busy for months to come. Not every game out there has specs as deep as FEAR or Oblivion, and photoshop is a breeze on my XPS. Can't recommend enough getting a 9800 if you can find it, and given everyone's desire to upgrade to a new model, I'd keep my eyes peeled in the NBF "For Sale" section, eBay, or the internet classifieds. I bet people are going to be parting these systems out more and more as the months come along - probably for cheap.

I may be selling my 9800 in a few weeks if all goes well. It will be missing the GPU thermal pad, as I need it to put my 9700 back in. I'll probably be selling it for the price of a 2gb ram upgrade for my new laptop. Probably about 200-250

I will be selling 2gb of ram for the XPS at the same time so keep on the lookout

I guess I shall be the last of my kind still using this Gen 1 unit on the boards. Good luck with your find, boza. Keep the spirit alive!

I'm still using my XPS Gen 1 (since May 2004).

I bought a MR 9800 from Dell Spare Parts on 28 May 2006. I got lazy about installing it. I installed it this morning - if for no other reason than to make sure it wasn't a dead card before the 90 day warranty ran out. It works with no problems - although it freaked on the reboot after I flashed the BIOS - all was well after a second reboot. I use my iXPS (Gen1) for work. I'm not a gamer so I don't care about additional pipe capacity. I upgraded for better compatibility when I install Vista (someday).

I have a pristine, unmodded 128 MB MR 9700 - ready to ship - that I'll be putting on the market.

Nice VB! He's right - if you take the gaming component out of it, it's still a wicked laptop. Unfortunately (for me as well), I tend to measure the capacity of a computer on it's prowess with the most recent game givings, and in this world of constant hardware turnover, you just can't.

I didn't think Dell spare parts had any MR9800's left. Strange, maybe it was pulled from another returned system.

They offered to sell me one this morning. I was just investigating on general principles. I'm wondering too if I should upgrade. I play Guild Wars mostly these days and it's not a problem.
