Ok i installed the 32-bit version in my ferrari 4005 laptop. first of all it runs flawlessly, no crash or bugs its seems pretty nice OS. BUTT i cant believe i cant find the aero glass feature!

is it because of my ati x700 video card??? how can i enable it? i mean 128mb ddr/ my vid card should support it pretty easily!!

any help?? thanks

Have you installed Windows Vista drivers for your x700? If not, that would explain it.

On mine I can get to it like this:

Right click the desktop, the Personalize, then Change Your Color Scheme, then clicking the "Open classic appearance properties" link.

Here's a screenshot:

Believe it or not, far from "pretty easily", 128MB is the absolute *minimum* that Microsoft requires to be able to run Aero:

Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs
To get an even better Windows Vista experience, including the Windows Aero user experience, ask for a Windows Vista Capable PC that is designated Premium Ready, or choose a PC that meets or exceeds the Premium Ready requirements described below. Features available in specific premium editions of Windows Vista, such as the ability to watch and record live TV, may require additional hardware.

A Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:

* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
* 1 GB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
* 128 MB of graphics memory.
* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
* DVD-ROM Drive3.
* Audio output capability.
* Internet access capability.

There's three things you need in order to run aero glass:

1. Your video card driver has to be WDDM. If it is it will say it in Device Manager,etc. next to the title of the card

2. You need to make sure you have at least a system performance rating of 2.

3. You need a 128MB dedicated graphics card; can't be shared memory

4. In RC2 there's a bug that requires you to have 1GB of RAM to run aero glass

Hopefully one of these things helps you out. If not there's some other things that can be done.

I have heard/seen of people running Aero without a dedicated video card and dedicated video memory.

If you look up the Compaq Presario US6130 on hpshopping.com, you will see that it is certified "Premium Ready," and only has an Intel 950 integrated video. Others have confirmed that it does work with Aero Glass.

How do you know what your system performance rating is?

Ur right about the 128, but wrong about it having to be dedicated. I've ran full Aero on a gma950 and xpress1100 (both shared ram) flawlessly.

"If the GPU uses shared memory, then no additional graphics memory is required beyond the 1 GB system memory requirement; If the GPU uses dedicated memory then 128MB is required."

MS footnote from the site referenced above. Doesn't the x700 resort to shared memory to go to 256mb if required?

Note: Ive been using the x64 version of Windows Vista build 5270 on an Acer Ferrari 4000 laptop powered by an AMD Turion 64-bit processor. The Windows Vista end-user experience on this laptop is awesome. This notebook computer has a wide screen and includes an ATI Mobility X700 video chip. After installing this build on my laptop, full Aero UI was automatically enabled as the ATI WDDM driver installed. The screen shots in this column were taken on the Ferrari 4000, saved in the version of Windows Paint that is included in 5270, and cropped, resized, and edited in Adobe Photoshop CS2, which I installed on the Ferrari 4000.

the above from this website: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...tapreview.mspx
