Hi there ive just reicently bought a Segate Momentus 100GB 7200 HD for my S2XP which had a hard drive failure. Can anyone let me know (before i strip all my machine) if this will work with no worries on my 1.5 yr old Sony VGN-S2XP?

thanks in advance

If thgelaptop is a year and a half old, then it is VERY unlikely that it'll use a SATA HDD. As long as the HDD you bought is a 2.5 inch IDE (aka PATA) hardrive (meaning it's not a Serial ATA) then it should be fine.

Thanks for the reply,

i believe the interface im looking for is ATA 100 would that also be known as PATA?? Parallell ATA?

If i search on ebay under interface types there is so much to choose between i.e DMA/ATA, IDE etc? should i be looking at ATA?

i take it 5400rpm will be the fastest i can go in this interface? can anyone reccomend and particular drive?

thanks again

Yes ATA 100 is pretty much the same thing (iirc there are also faster PATA drives, but they will be reverse compatible) so is when they call it IDE. Not too long a go I was looking for a HDD and comparing prices of ebay with some of the big guns like newegg. In the end when you add on shipping, you're better off buying one at newegg (or compusa or bestbuy or whatever) beacsue it works out to be the same price (or even chaper unless you get lucky in some auction) but you know you'll have good customer service should you need it. Actually you can get a 7200rpm drive if that's what you want. It will still work fine and be faster than a 5400 like it would in a newer laptop. *edit: make sure to check for sure wether it's using a SATA drive or not. Based on the age of the laptop I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but I'm not positive. Try looking for the detailed spec's on sony's site.
