5760 - perpetually loud? - Page 2

go 7900 gtx uses 45 watts

x1600 only uses 19 watts, x1400 is only about 10

The 5720 was sold with X700 and X800 video card. No Dualcore option. But IMHO opinion a DC processor is only usefull for heavy digital media editing. Normal multitasking is also ok with a fast singlecore P-M processor. An important Multitaskingfactor is the speed of the hard disk and the amount of memory.

Is it possible to use one of the 5720 video cards in the 5760?

Maybe - ask the shop you bought your 5760 from.
Clevo eventually uses the same video card module design for all new notebooks. So it is maybe no problem to switch in a video card with lower TDP.

Hey, I just got the np5760 (m570u) a little over a week ago also. I love it! Awesome power, beautiful screen, shockingly long battery power considering the size (3 hours word processing, internet, etc.). But it was damaged =( I called and talked to powernotebooks for maybe 20 minutes before I had an RMA number... quickest customer service ever (I've spent 3-4 hours with Alienware & Dell for similar problems where a system MUST be returned and they do everything they can to make you go away, assuming you're an idiot).

The first system has a major issue. The dvd drive was "generic" and had a tendency to disappear part way through an operation (out of device manager.. weird). And the hinges must have been damaged because the camera didn't even register and the screen had a flicker to it; most likely the back light. I just called and told pn and within an hour Sager was on the phone to give me RMA information and how I wanted to handle it - refund or replacement. Couple days later my (new) "precious" arrived and everything is great, it's all working perfectly... and then the whining starts up. The small fan in the center of the notebook is high pitched and annoying. The original notebook didn't have that problem.

FN-F2 wasn't the problem either. The most annoying thing when I open it up the only thing I can think it is cooling the HD or NB. The gpu and cpu are attached to the same heat pipe and is only cooled by the large fan which is the same volume as the little fan but much less noticeable because it is such a low pitch.

I only received the replacement yesterday. I have had replacement desktops before that were noisy and they never really bothered me. This is the exact same case that the older Pentium-m came in. It had the same fans.

I know in the end it is my decision but I was looking for some feedback. I also have two of the same model sitting here and I know their fans don't behave the same.

Please let me know what you learn. I am on my second 5760 and I find the noise to be next to untolerable. Sadly, this is the only computer on the market that seems to meet my needs. I am going to explore other graphics cards and some utilities and see what happens.

There is something very wrong with the design of the 5760. Please, no comments about super powerful graphics - that's an excuse.

Using mobmeter, I saw the system temperature start rising when I turned on the computer. It went up to about 38C, then the fan kicked in. Now, the temperature is 32C and the fan is running continuously. This is just plain broken - the components can all operate at 50C reliably. Why create so much noise to run the system 18C below where it needs to be?

Yes, this is the CPU temperature, not the GPU temperature. But, as swim pointed out, they share a common heat pipe, so the temperatures are probably pretty darned close...

they dont share a common heatpipe, they share a common fan.

"plese no comments about super powerful graphics, thats an excuse"

so an x1900xtx crossfire system should use no more energy or produce more heat than a radeon 7000/ve?

lol.
Sorry you are having troubles.
Well, my 5720 had no noise issues. Yeah, it wasn't really quite. But it was normal. How loud is it? Like desktop loud ?
I would think the new model would be about exactly the same as the 5720 with the 7800gtx.
well, goodluck!

since you don't care about gpu power; only thing i can think of is to do a straight up trade with someone that may have a 6600 Go, assuming that is the same style and size so it fits in your laptop. you won't need to do any software tinkering as the nvidia drivers are universal towars all Go series cards.

i would think that the 6600 cards are much quieter than their faster counterparts.
no 6600 cards were ever made in clevos modular format

you may want to get the x700 from the 5710/5320

it is the same format because one time someone put a 5720 7800 in a 5320

I have a Dell XPS1710 and Sager 5760,
both 1920x1200, 2.16Ghz, 7900GTX 512Mb

After 5 minutes the GPU fan of the Sager kicks in which gives a rather irritating sound at the beginning.
But the XPS is very quiet, only after 10minutes of gaming the fans start to turn faster but still quiet...
Dell has made their laptop so effeciently that not a lot of fans need to be running at a high speed tempo, the CPU is on the right and GPU on the left, the 2 main heat components are further away from eachother which results in a very quiet laptop, kudos Dell

I also had the problem of the center fan turning on all the time and having the high pitched whine. The solution that i came up with was a simple one and all i did was to prop the back end of the laptop with two 1.5 inch books under the legs of the laptop but was careful not to block the intake fan. After i did that the temp of the laptop dropped from about 50 to 35-40 degrees. Now the center fan never kicks on because the laptop is getting alot more cooler air than it did before and the laptop can breath better. That is the only problem with this laptop is that the air intake is under the laptop they should have designed the intake to be on the side of the laptop and force the air to the back. That would have solved a lot of heating issues and noise.

Dell just bought the rights to use the barebones system, they didn't make it. Kudos to whoever the ODM is for that particular model.
