difference btw macbook & ibook g4

Hi, I've never used apples outside of school and i'm wanting to switch to an apple notebook due to more security and I use desktop for games so I don't need it to play games. Simple office utilities, lightweight, and long life are basically all i wanted. Anyways, my question is how much better is the macbook than the powerbooks and the ibooks. Since their pricings aren't that far apart. Does the intel chip make that much more difference? Or is it mainly future proofing? thanks, don't know much when it comes to macs.

The new Intel Macs are quite a bit more powerful than the older G4 based iBooks and PowerBooks. They are faster, have brighter displays, and have the capability of booting Windows (if that's important). I'd say they are a pretty big leap forward, and my recommendation would be to go for a MacBook for your needs. You'll want to check them out in person to see if they meet your requirements wrt size.

The speed has been significantly increased since they moved from PPC to Intel. I saw a video of the MacBook and it easily beats my PB, which makes me sad . But, a Macbook would probably be a perfect fit for you since you use your desktop to play games. Also, MacBooks are widescreen, 13.3" at that, compared to iBook's which are 4:3.

Thanks for the input guys...but that brings me to another question of how come the g4's haven't dropped that significantly in price? the price disparity isn't that much to provoke one to buy that over a macbook.

Macs keep their value a lot better than PCs.

If only Apple would have kept the Ati Radeon 9550 (or better) and moved it to the MacBook, I would be sold for sure. I am not too keen on integrated graphics with shared memory. (The first time on a Mac since the days of the Macintosh IIsi.)

macbook got the new "intel chips", so they get the "intel gma" with it. im sure apple wanted a better solution.

anyone know if there were any conditions between apple and intel to bundle the gma950 with the duo's in the macbooks?

I imagine they made that move as a cost effective step since the redesign. I was hoping for something a bit better but from a technical standpoint, the MacBook seems just like a Mac Mini only in portable form (sans the Core Solo.)

I hope in a future revision Apple chooses to offer a dedicated video solution or come out and meet halfway with a 13" MacBook Pro. I love large displays as much as the next guy, but I prefer portability when it comes to my Notebook. (the same reason I am keeping my decked out 12" iBook G4)

Possibly they went with the GMA for thermal reasons in the smaller MacBooks. It is quite a bit cooler than, for example, the X1600.

As to speed, the MacBook will eat the G4 alive.

Now, out of curiosity here, have any MacBook owners tried running any of the current crop of Mac titles or PC games in BootCamp?

My iBook runs quite a few games at a decent clip and actually runs Halo and Doom 3 far better than my poor Gateway could ever dream of. (Intel Exreme Graphics 855/865 FTL )

In fact, I am amazed Doom 3 ran on my iBook at all. It wasn't smooth but playable. All I thought I would be able to run would be WoW, but what I threw at this bugger, I was only really laughed at by trying to run WoW at 1024x768 with 4x AA.. (Crash!!! )

I  Halo on my PowerBook. On my PC it ran okay but I only had a GeForce 2 so I never got any of the specular highlights or good textures and stuff. On my PowerBook I can run it with everything set to high except lens reflections—for some reason they bring the game to a crawl—and I can run it at 1440x900 with all the reflections and textures and highlights. It's a much better experience than on my PC.

Doom 3, on the other hand, plays like crap even in 640x480. It's playable but more than a couple monsters on the screen and it skips. But, on the other hand, it looks like the original Doom! Yay pixels!
