I ordered an external 320gig HDD from dell on friday and it was delivered yesterday via DHL and guess what they left the package at my door WHILE it was raining. The entire damn thing is now water logged. I called DHL and they said awhile back i signed the form to allow the driver to leave the package at the doorstep...I was like WTF it was raining and he just left it in the rain. No response from them, so now im trying to get dell involved. Lets see what happens.

Was it raining when the driver left it there? Or did it start raining after he left?

That was stupid, I hope DHL will give you something for it.

I left the house at around 9:30am it was raining pretty hard. The package was delivered at 11am. I worked about 10miles from my house and as far as i know it rained all day.

I have had nothing but problems with DHL. I wish dell offered UPS or Fedex. I pay the extra cash to use them.

UPS and Fed Ex aren't any better. Especially UPS.

they are pretty shitty. the reason dhl says you signed the package is because its what the drivers do. they look at the package name and sign some generic looking signature and leave it. stupid lazy f*ckers....

Did you infact sign a release to allow the package to be left at the door?

Well it was a pre-owned home. I never did but maybe the prior owners did.

Yeah, thats why I tell Dell to deliver all packages to my workplace. especially with DHL, they are horrible.
for future, ask dhl for proof of your authorization.

also, i dont know about you guys, but when i order electronics, i track shipping online like crazy and cant wait for it. if i will not be home, i leave post its speicifically telling them what to do with the package, usually asking them to hold it at the main center.

Wow, UPS and Fedex around here are pretty good about putting our boxes in plastic bags if it even looks like rain or may possibly rain. I can't ever remember having DHL deliver when it's been questionable weather so I can't comment on them.

Hell, my friend just had something delivered and it was raining. The driver put it in a plastic bag and put it under a door mat rofl. Overall all though, I'm not a big fan of UPS or Fedex, and I've not had enough experience with DHL to know, but sounds like they suck too.

Anyway, dell has to have insurance on that right? They should get it worked out for ya.

Dell's shipping with DHL is fast, but yes, it does have its drawbacks. For starters, even if you HAD signed an authorization to allow them to leave the package before, that authorization should only have applied to that package, not all future packages.

DHL has extremely bad issues with getting signatures. Out of ALL of the shipments I've received via DHL, only one driver has ever rung the doorbell, for an SD card I overnighted from outpost.com. At least ten other valuable, expensive packages, like my Dell Axim X50v, DHL has simply left at my doorstep, without even bothering knocking or ringing the doorbell, despite large stickers/print on the box saying "SIGNATURE REQUIRED".

This hasn't posed any problems for me as of yet, though, as I live in a relatively safe area (suburban San Jose), and when it does rain, my roof extends far out enough over my front door to protect any packages, so I'm willing to sacrifice some peace of mind for fast shipping.

I just left UPS for a new career. I personally know drivers from DHL and FedEx, Most of us treat your packages with respect and care about the customers on our route. Every once and awhile you get a lazy driver, sorry to hear about that.

yeah, i like dhl the least now of the 3 major ones (fedex, ups, dhl). i got the 500gig drive from outpost.com last wednesday, checked all the tracking details and it arrived at like 2pm yesterday(monday). i was trying to make sure to be home as much as i could because outpost.com says on their website something about delivery and that they try to deliver twice and if both times fail, it goes back to their warehouse. it covers whether or not the package arrives damaged and such. they also have somethign about filling out a release form that absolves them from any problems with packages being stolen on the doorstep if you let them just leave it there. so, yesterday, i was walking around my house and happend to be passing by my door as the dhl delivery guy was opening the screen door and putting it in. he rang the doorbell a few times, then left. i opened the door like 5 seconds later and he was already at the sidewalk, like 20 feet away. no signature and such. too bad i'm too nice to call up outpost.com and say that i did not receive the package and did not sign for it and have possibly gotten a free hard drive. when both of my laptops came (different times) and when my ipod came (mix of fedex and ups deliveries) they made sure to get a signature. when my xps came (forget if it was fedex or ups), the guy didnt even bring it from the truck. he was just making sure someone was home before even bothering to bring it over.

thats why i call the ups depot and tell them they need to pull it from the truck before it goes out. if the person says thay cant i ask them for there supv while i use their name. usually gets done right away

We have had nothing but bad experiences with DHL at our office. It's gotten to the point where we are actually seriously looking at going back to FedEx even though they are double DHL's price we have for shipping.

Get this: DHL *NEVER* requires my signature. It doesn't matter who the package is shipped from. Whenever the package says "Adult Signature Required" the DHL guy just crosses it out & leaves the package at my door.

i live in hawaii

dhl next day is for shame.. i usually get it on the 2nd day but the last order i got didnt come till the 3rd day morning

fedex = so far is da best.. no lates.. and one time i wasnt home and they left a dooirtag and fedex actually came back to my house and checked if i came home. THAT IS A ULTAMITE THERE!!

ups= never dealt with them with dell

You're right... all 3 carriers have issues. Here are some of my experiences:

DHL
Left my monitor at a neighbor's house in the middle of a rainy winter. Neighbors were on vacation. It was shipped "Overnight", but after waiting a week, I called the vendor, who told me it had been shipped the previous week. The vendor started a trace. DHL went to the house they left it at, and found it still lying outside. The box was so wet that they couldn't lift it without it falling apart. They tried to deliver it to me in that condition, but I obviously refused it.

UPS
Their regular ground delivery is usually OK, but their 3-day delivery service (which Newegg uses) sucks. I have NEVER had a package delivered in 3 days or less using that service. One of them actually arrived torn open, with all of its contents gone. Didn't sign for that one either.

FEDEX
They recently delivered a hand made classical guitar, which came in a case enclosed in a cardboard box. The case had "FRAGILE" and "THIS END UP" (lying flat) signs all over it. Because of the value of the guitar, a signature was required. Luckily I was home. It was a very windy day, and I watched the driver leave the guitar at my downstairs neighbor's apartment (The invoice was clearly marked "2nd floor"). It was left standing on end (neck at top and body on bottom) in such a way that a light gust of wind would probably have caused the package to fall over and destroy the guitar. The driver didn't even knock on the door. I came running downstairs, and asked her why she didn't want signature (since it was shipped "signature required"). She just shrugged her shoulders, handed me the electronic signature gadget, and walked off without a word.

All three really need to get their acts together, and the only thing that will cause that to happen is that some new competition, which actually does the job properly, will arrive on the scene. In other words, don't hold your breath.

I've had nothing but good experiences with FedEx, and only a few issues with UPS. Guess it depends on who the drivers are in your location.

I've had one problem with UPS, although it's not really their fault. When I ordered my E1705's (ordered one, better deal came up so I bought another one and was going to return the first when I got it), UPS always tried to deliver it when no one was home, about an hour before I would get home. Three days in a row, they came at 11 AM with the first E1705, then when the second one came, again, three days in a row, they tried to deliver at 11 AM, and I ended up having to drive 30 minutes down to pick it up from their depot.

The other issue I've had with UPS is that occasionally, the package will go out for delivery, but they won't attempt to deliver, and I have no idea why. I guess their routes take them longer than they expect. It's happened a few times, and I used to use UPS a lot, ordering from Newegg. However, their three day shipping almost always arrives in three days for me, and I've had a few occasions where my packages arrived in two days.
