Preparing toshiba satellite M45-S165 for restore

Hi all, I have a toshiba satellite M45-S165 that I need to restore to the factory software settings. All I have to use is the toshiba restore CD and anything I can download off the net. I used it and now the computer won't boot from the HDD. I tried to clear out the MBR and repartition the drive using several methods ranging from fdisk to partition magic to even a linux recovery cd, but so far I have had no luck getting a good NTFS partition that the restore CD will recognize as valid, the cd will still go through the steps and write the original software to the hard disk though. When the CD finishes writing the software to the drive it outputs the following message:

Cache Write Failure, result = 1, drive = 1, sectors 0 to 1

I am assuming this has something to do with the MBR but I can't seem to figure out how to fix this problem. Any suggestions on how I can use this cd to restore my factory software?

I own two Satellite notebooks, A15-s127 & m45-s165 which i just purchased used. my a15 came with a "recovery and Applications dvd", but the m45 did not, and i too want to restore the factory settings, My a15 recovery disk works like a charm every time. I posted a message a couple of days ago about this.. my question for you is: did your m45 come with a cd or dvd? and is it labeled restore or recovery? at any rate i would love a copy to try and do the same.

I had some bad luck with M45 restores. It looks like there are many different versions of recovery DVDs. It is possible that a restore DVD for one M45 model will not work for another M45 model. Let me explain. One day I replaced the hard drive on Satellite M45 and wanted to re-image the drive. I tried 2 different recovery DVDs from 2 different M45 laptops (different versions) and they didn’t work! The restore process itself was going fine from the beginning to the end, but finally after I rebooted the laptop I got a weird error (something about HDD, do not remember exactly). I tried about 4 times and even replace the hard drive, but wasn’t able to re-image the drive. I was able to re-image the drive only after I asked my customer to bring in the original recovery DVD and it worked fine! If you want to get a recovery DVD for you model, try call to Toshiba and buy it from them. I believe it’s not expensive (around $40).

Ok, I figured out the problem...

FONT="Arial Black"]You cannot restore the original factory settings if you have a user and or administrator password set on the BIOS.[/font]

The password information is stored in the first 63 sectors of the HDD. Once I disabled this password it worked like a charm and could write in the MBR information. Also as far as the DVD I own, I believe it says Restore disk on it. It uses Norton ghost to reimage the drive. Also as far as using another recovery disk on the same model, If you look through the batch files that are used to run the recovery they are specific to each hard drive, you would have to change the serial number references in each file to the serial number of the new hard drive.
