Fujitsu N5010 (P4) or Mitac 8355 (A64)

Hi everyone.

I'm having trouble deciding between the Fujitsu N5010 and Mitac 8355 notebooks. Here's a summary of each:

Fujitsu N5010:

LCD: 16.1" SXGA+, 20ms response time
CPU: P4 3.0GHz w/ HT
RAM: 512MB, 333MHz
Graphics: M10 64MB
Battery Life: 2 hours max
Weight: 10.4 lbs.

Mitac 8355:

LCD: 15" SXGA+, 25ms response time
CPU: AMD64 3200+
RAM 512MB, 400MHz
Graphics: M10 128MB
Battery Life: 3 hours max
Weight: 7.9 lbs.

I was at first leaning heavily toward the N5010 because of its beautiful screen, but the 8355 has better battery life, graphics performance, computational power (most of the time), weight, and supported RAM. The N5010 is also too large to quite fit in a backpack. I'm really worried about the quality of the 8355's screen, however.

If anyone has any experience with the screen quality of the Mitac 8355, or can offer some insight into other factors I should consider in this decision, I'd really appreciate the comments.

Thanks,
Zetagauss

I am also looking at the N5010 'coz of the screen (important factor for my work) but I am not keen on its 64Vram, size, and battery life.

Can you give a link to details on the Mitac 8355 notebooks (US website/dealer?). I am also looking into AMD Athalon 64 based machines like Voodoo Envy M:855 and the Hypersonic Aviator AX6 but need to check into their screen quality. They are also very expensive!! My "ideal" would be an AMD 64, 128 ATI Vram, and a "Crystal View" screen!!. Another thread has these boys listed:

http://www.********.com/shop5/
http://www.eurocom.com/ - See the Mirage D900T

However not sure if these are reputable dealers or are they full of BS!

Photogeek: Mirage D900T not available 'till June '04!! I may just get a cheaper notebook for now (like the eMachines 6807) just to get me going. Then get my "ideal" spec.

N5010 great screen!

Anyone else care to weigh in?

I am fed up with waiting! I will probably take the cheap route and go with an eMAchines 6805/7. The Fujitsu has a much, much better screen but lacks some of the other features i want for that price. However most of the time the notebook will be connected to my Lacie 19/22" monitors for accurate color correction etc. Both the Fujitsu and Mitac 8355 (and their clones like Hypersonic etc) cost from $600 to $1000 more than the eMachine. So, that leaves me with extra cash to buy the Epson 2200 printer and/or part of the very expensive fast Nikon lens i need!! For now the eMachines will hopefully do the job and I will have the Epson to finish off my portfolio, save $ printing for clients and I can still afford to drinl copius amouts of beer at the weekend!

When my ideal notebook appears on the market (AMD Athalon 6400, Radeaon 9600/9700 128/256Mb VRAM, 7200 rpm drive etc etc etc) I will buy it then and keep the eMachines as a backup.

Thanks, Elvis has left the building

Fujitsu N5010 supports the PC 3200 (400MHz)memory?

Almost all the sellers don’t offer the full specifications for this notebook like memory speed , hdd rpm speed.
Does Fujitsu N5010 supports the PC 3200 (400MHz)memory?

depending on how long your willing to wait, my mitac is on order as well from cyberpowerpc.com

though, if you keep your business work confined to an office or a desk, you could just set up another monitor to do your work on. I'm intending on doing this so I can use my nice 21" monitor for gaming.

fiction1337: I may put off my purchase untill your review! The base XPLORER notebook looks a reasonable buy. How are cyberpowersystem.com as a company?

well one nice thing about cyberpowerpc.com is that they answer their phone. So no matter what happens, there's some poor soul (i think the chinese girl is the only one) who will get vented on if something goes wrong.

I know it may not seem like a lot, but a live voice has far more power than an email does. So being able to contact a company by phone means a lot to me.
