Sager 5760 (Clevo M570U) vs m1710

I'm getting a new laptop at the first of July and these two models are the top candidates. I'm looking at 2.16 processor, 2gb ram, 100 gb 7200 rpm hdd, WUXGA screen. I can get the price close enough that the difference doesn't matter (work is buying it anyway).

As I see it the main difference is that the Dell has better speakers and more graphics memory, while the Sager has a full keyboard, camera, and card reader.

Does anyone have reasonably objective information they'd like to share about why one of these machines might be prefereable? My stepson has the Sager, but I haven't yet seen the Dell.

Things I care about:
Possible upgrade paths to future CPU or GPU
Raw speed
Gaming performance
Build quality
Ergonomics
Features

Things I definitely don't care about:
Bling (Frankly I'd rather have the E1705 case)
Why you love/hate Sager/Clevo/Dell.

If there are other machines you think I should consider, I'd be happy to hear about it, but nothing larger than 17", 10lbs, and nothing smaller than WUXGA 15.4 inch.

Thanks,

Jim

Just as some food for thought on your decision, depending on when you are going to buy Sager is supposed to release their 512MB 7900 early next month. I don't know about you but but speakers have never been a selling point for me because you will never find me without my trusty headphones. So i am more of a fan of good sound quality through headphones or my 6.1 receiver.

Speakers aren't crucial, but are nice. I don't often wear headphones as I like to be able to hear ambient noise (kids etc.).

If I go with the sager I'll definitely wait until at least July 1 so I can get Sager's extended warranty. How firm is the "early July" release date for the 512mb 7900 GTX on the sager? Also, what are the speculations on whether the Sager will be able to upgrade to the Merom chips?

I think Luke said in another thead that the 5760 can be upgraded to the Conroe chip, which is supposed to be the best performing chip out there when it's released next month. I would think it could support the Merom as well, though Luke would know for sure.

Any conjectures on the relative likelihood of Dell vs. Sager providing upgrade paths? Who has the better history of doing so?

CPU upgrades to the Conroe and Merom are user upgrades. Likewise, the upgrade from the 7800 GTXs to the 7900 GS's in the 5760 is also a user upgrade. However, if you don't feel comfortable tackling the project you can send it back to Sager and they'll do it for you--for a fee, I would assume.

Oh, I'm fine doing the upgrades, just wondering if either Dell or Sager is more likely to offer an upgrade path longer. I'll have some cash left in my budget for future upgrades, but not enough to by another top line laptop anytime soon.

I thought the 5760 already came with the 7900GTX 256mb?

The 5760 will be upgradable to a merom but may require a bios update.
Conroe however is the desktop version and is a different socket type and so will definately not work with the 5760.

Sager has already successfully tested the Merom processor in the NP5760 and NP5750 and they work just fine without a BIOS update.

Any thoughts on whether I'm more likely to have upgrade paths to, say, a DX10 graphics card with Sager or Dell?

^ maybe with both of them or just the dell. Because the xps 170 had the 6800 ultra then the 7800 gtx, the 9300 had the 6800 go, 6800 ultra and 7800 gtx. The e1705 has the x1400x 7800 go, and 7900 gs. The xps 1710 only has the 7900 gtx 512 mb but theres a history of upgrading cards right there. I would go with the dell over any gaming laptop right now(in the same price range, actually it matters, if you want a dtr then go with like the 9750, 9890, hpersonic fx7 and ex, aw area 51 7700, aw aurora m7700, etc. But for just gaming and not using it as a dtr xps 1710) Look in the f/s section, there are some really nice deals

The first DX10 chip on the near horizon is the nVidia G80 I think. Even though it's got more transitors than the 7900 it's a 80nm chip so it might use the same amount of power as the 7900 (which is a 90nm chip). Let's keep our fingers crossed.
