Help me decide!

you give us very little information, but I'm going to say core duo. Its dual core, fast, low TDP, and can be upgradable to a 64 bit merom

Before I give a single recommendation, this is what I will say:

If you don't know what you want to do with it, any recommendation you get will be useless.

You have to tell people why you are considering what you are considering. Are you a gamer? Business user? Professional 3D designer/artist?

Do you want something in a laptop that will run a long time? Provide desktop-like performance? Generate the least amount of heat?

Just so you know:

Turion competes directly with Core Duo. Although, in most cases, Core Duo will be better (esp. because you can upgrade without almost any changes to Merom).

Athlon64 X2 is in a completely different class. It competes with the P4. It is a desktop processor that generates a LOT of heat (compared to its mobile counterparts), requires a more efficient cooling solution, and spanks both the Turion and the Core Duo in terms of performance.

So, I ask again, what do you want to do with your computer system?

Regards,

zakaluka2.

PS: My personal preference lies with the Athlon 64 X2. But, I desire performance over all else.

Sorry for lack of info, I was at my job and I had to exit quickly before my boss came over. Anyway, ill be using it mainly for programming compiling and desktop usage. I compile stuff 80% of the time while i'm on the comp. Also, i'm only using it for linux. I don't care about heat, as long as the laptop doesn't melt, and i'd think that less than two hours of running time is really week.

well.. for compiling.. I'd say X2, but your running time will probably be less than 2 hours.

Not true.

It might spank the Turion but does not spank the core duos...the performance is quite similar actually, (clock x clock)

the guy wants to do compiling though.. IIRC the higher clocks the X2 has will help it a lot.

well ok, but as I said on my first post, core duos will be upgradable to meroms, and meroms = pwnage

That's it:

- Two cores, like both AthlonX2 and Core Duo.
- 64 bits, like both AthlonX2 and Turion.
- Good TDP, like both Turiion and Core Duo.

I'm waiting for a 13.3 or a 14.1" TurionX2. Maybe the Benq Joybook T31W.

comparing Merom to Turion is like comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing current to next gen. totally unfair comparison. Wait for the AMD AM2 platform to come out, and the CPUs that will follow, then tell me who's spanking who.
