purchase issue, latitude vs inspirion

Hi,

As part of my college scholarship, I will recieve the Dell Latitude D520 laptop. Specs are decent (T2300, 512 ram, 60 gig HD, etc) but the graphics card is crappy (intel integrated) and it doesn't look like there is an option to upgrade. I plan on gaming a bit. The laptop is valued at about $1350 on dell's website. BTW, all transactions will be done directly with a specified dell representative, not the college.

I understand that the latitude uses better materials, 3 year warranty, etc, but I really want a good graphics card and a larger screen (latitude is only 15 inch max). As you may have guessed, I basically want an inspiron 1705. I will try and see whether dell will budge and let me purchase the inspiron instead of the latitude (i will pay any extra money if necessary).

So my question is, if dell will not allow me to purchase the inspiron, is it possible to sell the latitude on another website (ebay) and then purchase the inspirion? And is it wise to leave the supposedly more "solid" latitude in order to get a higher spec inspiron?

I would personally trade a Latitude D520 for a Inspiron E1705. The trade off is the 17in widescreen and 7900 GS with the Inspiron. I would do that in a heartbeat. The only thing I like about the Latitude D520 is the magnesium casing.

Neither of those statemets are true.
You can get up to a 4 year warrenty on any notebook. That may be just what your university is offering.
One of the main differencecs of lattitueds is that they are built with more statndard parts that are interchangable. Like a media bay that swaps for an extra battery. This helps buisinesses who buy lots of them exchange parts with other lattitude machines.

If you can talk them into a machine with a better video card, go for it. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

Yes, you can get both Latitudes and Inspirons with a 4 year warranty, it's just that the Latitudes come with the 3 year warranty as a standard option. Inspirons on the other hand can have as little as 90 days, though the higher end units have a 1 year warranty as standard.

I would go inspiron in an instant. I have the 9300 and its a very solid build structure, and with coupons you can get them for very cheap
