EMachine M2350

Thread Starter
I recently acquiered an M2350 Notebook. It was half taken apart and needed a new power jack. I got it fixed and it's almost completely working.

I cannot get the audio to work. I am not getting any sound from either my headphone jack or my speakers.

The drivers that windows installs by default:

ALi Audio Accelerator WDM driver
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Vidio Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Standard Game Port (!) This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
Video Codecs

When I run PC Wizard 2006, it tells me that my audio device is:

ALI M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device

Emachines.com gives me SoundMax audio drivers to install for this notebook. Windows wont do it automatically, so I have to go in and 'Install from a list or specific location' then 'Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.' the 'Have Disk' and browse to the .ini file in the soundmax folder. It gives me the option to install the SoundMAX Intgrated Digital Audio. But after I install th drivers and restart, the audio device has failed to start.

Does anyone have anywhere they can direct me to get the correct drivers? Or does anyone have the restore disk with the drivers on the cd? If you do, please email them to leroymarshall@gmail.com

Thanks for any help!

I am receiving the same error with the Conexant Audio Driver that I was with the SoundMax driver.

It will allow me to install them if manually select the driver. But once they are installed I get the message 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)'

just a dumb question - have u tried the UN-install and re.install of the device?
does ur laptop has in the bios the option to "disable plug&play OS"? if yes - might want to disable it as well

The bios on this notebook is very limited. It does not allow me to Disable the Plug and Play OS.

Everytime I remove the device and run the Conxent, SoundMAX driver installation, or add new hardware, windows automatically installs the ALi Audio Accelerator WDM driver and Standard game port drivers.

There isnt even a game port on this notebook.

shall we try another driver?

Same error with these drivers. I removed the device, and ran the Realtek install. After the install completed, windows had me reboot. As soon as windows came up it detected and installed the ALi audio drives again, so I went to update drivers and selected the realtek ones. It was in the list of compatable drivers and installed without problems. But once installed 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)'

the issue we r having is that XP still has traces of "ALI" inside the registry and automatically defaulting to this to look for drivers
1. XP clean install is one of the solution
2. clean (delete) out ALI related registry entries, very risqué if u r not careful - they r mostly in HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (look into Add & Remove program for ALI related stuff as well)
3. try this driver cleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/ - free version) after uninstall the drivers and then
4. http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1217/ to stop the XP automatic driver update - do not forget to put it back

Well this is definately the correct driver. It installs smoothly and once installs, its the driver that windows uses to install the sound card every time I goto uninstall and reinstall. I still get no sound (Device cannot start code 10).

I have to assume now that the sound card is damaged. Every other thread I have read on the internet on multiple message boards people say that even with the ALi drivers installed they can at least get sound out of the jacks in the back. I am getting no sound at all.

When I got this notebook the power jack was badly damaged. I'm thinking that when the power jack fried, the heat damaged the sound card.

Thanks for the help

i doubt it that ur sound card is fried, there is a trick that i used zillions years ago, short from re-installing the whole system (due to missing recovery disk etc ...) i'd manually ADD - in ur case - a sound card. this would probably create a 2nd sound card entry in ur device manager, and "by crossing ur toes & fingers" it will start fine.
worth a shot!

I had the same problem and it was due to a bad modem card. The m2350's modem card is directly on top of the audio chip (near the DC connector), so maybe it somehow affects the audio. When I took the modem out, the sound came back. I used a modem from a m2352 I had for parts and both the modem and sound worked again. After you take out the modem, you can also inspect the audio chip to see if it looks damaged.

I pulled this thing apart for the 20th time, yanked out the modem, put it back together.

I dont think I was ever so excited to hear that windows login noise.

So it was the modem this whole time....I dont need a modem anyway.

Thanks for all the help. Much appriciated.
