There was a recall on a bunch of Dell batteries last year. I wonder if someone didn't get the memo...

I dont think it's a hoax.

I'd love to know what caused it.

Imagine if it had been on someone's lap.

I'm going to have to make a tin foil apron and use a welders helmet when I websurf now. Great.

The Inquirer is just about the most unreliable source for news.

Just to be clear, this is the UK Inquirer, not the checkout line tabloid here in the US.

Posh. That's just like saying the Onion isn't America's finest news source. Especially when it explicitly makes the claim on its web site.

I dont see blue trims like mine, so it doesnt look like its 8600's however I need more photos and close up pics as well to really determine it!

...I am going to have to say it's a hoax...#1. The source of the report is less than credible. #2...5 minutes...THere isn't anything on or in that laptop that could maintain a series of explosions over 5 minutes. Even if the battery did go south it isn't going to create a self-sustaining process lol.

THey probably placed a M-80 under the damn thing & had time lapse photography going.... That table looks in pretty damn good shape & so does the cloth for the way they are hyping it up heh..Ever notice in the first pic how much smoke is there?

...No fire extinguishers in the Conference building?

Latitude D510 w/ 15" XGA Display.

Faulty recall battery.

And when a battery is on fire... it burns at a good temperature. Then as the flames eat away other items inside the laptop it can cause small explosions from pockets of air or gas-laden materials within the machine that operate normally at upto 200-F, but when you have a fire... even the laser PUH inside your CD/DVD drive can burst when it melts.

I hate to imagine what the results would have been if that explosion had happened onboard a commercial flight...

Now while most facilities don't have fire extinguishers capable of putting out metal fires (when metals burn they produce their own Oxygen which means you can't snuff it out or douse it.). However, I do find it damn convenient that the camera just happened to snap a photo right as something exploded inside the notebook. Yes, there is Magnesium in a D505, but it takes a REALLY hot flame to ignite it. Remember high school chemistry class? You had to ignite the Mg with the blue flame of a bunsen burner. Most batteries don't burn themselves, but they get hot enough to set something else on fire.

All in all, this is an isolated incident at best. There have been more Apple notebooks catch fire from their battery than this.

Definitely, there are 5+ topics on every other non-relevent topic!

...On another note, sources indicate Dell is investigating incident & has confirmed that it was a laptop purchased directly from them.

Aww man. Now, this is making me think twice about getting a Dell after getting the new coupon and was certain on buying it.
