nVIDIA Takeover

Seems as if nVIDIA cards are taking over the Sager notebook world as of late... anyone know if ATI can/will respond?
its not just the sager notebooks its all enthusiast notebooks at the moment cause ati couldn't/cannot provide an equal performing/efficient card. but the x1800 mobile is out and performs well. ati is still the leader in dedicated notebook graphics card shipments and will provide nice cards in the future too. don't worry!

Im pretty sure ati sells more mobile chips than nvidia. Remember its not the high end chips they make money on, its the mid-low end.

Not so sure about that. The high end, enthusiast market can generate some nice cash flow. That's why Dell bought Alienware.

Trust me, I'm nowhere close to buying a new laptop. I'm going to let my 8790 roll on as my primary until it blows up.

I just wanted to make an observation that I've noticed.

Perfect example right there. How many laptops does dell sell? How many laptops does alienware sell? The average user far outnumbers people like us that demand the best performance.

My point may have gotten missed. I agree that the mass market generates more profit than the enthusiast market. But I don't agree with:

I think they make a tidy sum on the high end market as well.

They do make quite a bit of money on high-end chips. However, their bread-and-butter is low-mid end chips.

However, I think Clevo (who supplies Sager's notebooks) has a bigger problem than other providers. Clevo created their own modular GPU format, so as to be able to put both ATi and nVidia cards into its notebooks. Unfortunately, this hasn't paid off yet, in my opinion. It also means that for every mobile GPU ATi and nVidia release, Clevo has to create a version in their proprietary format. I am sure this is causing some headaches at their headquarter and in the technical department.

Clevo have a problem with the X1800XT (a major bug) which is why you havent seen it yet even though it was jointly announced by ATI and Rock (another Clevo reseller) 3 months ago. Rock have actually announced that they have withdrawn the card altogether so it looks like you may never see it in a Clevo model at this rate.

That's interesting. What was the nature of the problem? Was it a power or cooling issue?

Unforunately i dont have that info. all i know is that the card was withdrawn as they were unable to resolve a problem with it at present.

The official announcement said

Quote:
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have taken the decision to remove the ATI X1800XT option from the Xtreme CTX. The reason for this has been a continued delay in the part moving to mass production with our supplier. Technical bugs are still outstanding with the product and we have no firm date for the resolution of these. Rather than continuing to hold customers up with no resolution in sight, we are removing this product so that we can focus our efforts on other things.

We will be contacting the few remaining customers who are waiting for X1800XT to discuss their options but most people have already moved to the NVIDIA option anyway. This move is free of charge.

We apologise for this and hope that you will understand that we offered the ATI X1800XT in good faith and it is continued delays in removing bugs from the product that have lead us to remove it from our range.

Sounds like the issues are on ATI's side. Too bad for us and them. Having one product dominate the market (nVidia) is not good for the consumer.
Totally agree with that. Lets hope ATI can get its act together again on the mobile high end cards again, although ATI had a good 2004/2005 in this respect unlike nvidia.

It's always the 4 and 6 cylinder cars that are the bread and butter, the tuner cars are niche and as such a smaller market. Same for the GPU's.

Well, that blows for us!

And on top of that, a lot of Linux users prefer nVidia over ATI.

Not to sound like an ass, but ATI's drivers suck... At least nVidia creates some decent drivers for Linux.

Until ATI can create decent drivers, I, for one, would not consider them. (unless someone else creates a better one ^.^)
Plus it takes forever to get ATI to come out with drivers as NVidia comes out with updates almost on a weekly basis.
ati does driver updates every month which i think is a lot better than unofficial drivers every second day.
Why do you say unofficial? The official version is at http://www.nvidia.com. At least nVidia gives you the option of using newer, unsupported drivers in case there is a bug that is not addressed in the current version. That option does not exist with ATi.
i meant that the time between official driver releases at nvidia is also a around a month of time.
i have nothing against releasing (or rather leaking) unofficial drivers, i just wanted to point out that ati officially releases drivers as fast as nvidia does so there is basically no difference and he said ati takes forever to come out with new drivers - a month isn't forever :P
