Wireless questions

I'm quite new with the wireless internet and had a few questions...

1. While web-surfing, downloading, e-mailing, etc. in wireless mode (hot-spots or a home router), does the virus/firewall software, like Norton, still protect the computer?

2. Should I turn off/disable the radio/wireless card when I'm using the direct, wired connection to my cable modem?

As I mentioned, I'm new at this, so be gentle.

Thanks!

1) The wireless connection acts just like a normal wired connection and your protection software should still behave the same way.

2) Leaving your wireless card on shouldnt effect your wired connection if you leave it on. It usually doesnt matter if its on or off. IMO

You should make sure that you are running the WEP encryption that comes with you router. There should be details on this in your manual.

We had a case in Toronto of some perv surfing kiddie porn through peoples "open" or for a better "left open" wireless connections.

Make sure you secure it and then you don't have to worry about leaving it on all the time.

Another good way to protection your network disable broadcasting of your SSID and also change the default channel. The more you can get your system away from default factory settings the more secure it will be.

How would I do these things you mentioned?

Thanks to all for the tips!

They would be located in your router /access point config. Usually you can access this by pointing your web browser to the address of the router / access point IE 192.168.1.1 or to whatever ip is assigned to it. There should be options to disable these items in either a General Settings tab or a Wireless settings tab. If they arent located there they might be in a advanced tab. Also if you havent change the password on it so malicious war drivers cant access your router and change settings in it.
