Latitude D620 Review

Well, I am the proud owner of a Latitude D620. It look a while for me to actually make the choice of the D620. I loved the specs when it was announce but I could never catch a good deal on it. Then I had decided with to go with the M400 as a hybrid of a mobile, yet powerful computer with Tablet PC functions.

After reading reviews of the M400, I decided to cancel the order. I picked up this D620 through the outlet with the following specs:

T2300 Core Duo
2 GB 667 MHz Ram
256 Nvidia 110M
CDRW/DVD
9 - Cell
XP Pro
Office Pro
with 3 yr Warranty and + CC
plus Quickbook Pro totaling around $1900.

I'm sure there may have been better deals around but this is the best I could find...

I took pictures of it and I'll find some way to upload them later.

Screen
Not impressed at all. For the price, maybe I should not complain and the fact you cannot get the 1440x900 resolution with other vendors given the size of the screen. When booting the computer and XP was loading you can see the light leakage. Only around the center of the screen was it truly black.

I have the Dell 20" wide; the newest edition. I will have to provide additional feed back later when I hook it up.

Battery
Too my surprised it was fully juiced. At the originaly settings it was a little over 5 hours. I took the brightness down, which made the viewability better, and it gave it a bit of a boost. I have wireless on too, with about 5 hours of run time. We'll, see...

Packaging
I have to say it was packed neatly. When I opened the box, there was a box of the software and the power adapters. Under that box the laptop was wrapped in plastic and the ends were covered with foam. I have to say that, I wish they had placed the laptop in another box too. Nevertheless, I do not see any current harm in how it was packed.

Setup
Ummm, I booted it and XP came up. As I was asked to name the "computer", I hit next to go to the next sttp and the laptop starts screaming. Now, I couldn't tell if it was a fan going wild or the processing being stalled causing the music to skip insanely. Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't help. I had to hold the power button for several seconds and then the machine kicked off.

I rebooted and it took me back to the last step and the setup finished with no other hitch.

After logging into Windows, I saw Dell's ugly Desktop. I was surprised not to be inundated(sp?) with tons of icons; there was only four, plus the trash can. However, I was not happy with all the processes loading in the background. The taskbar was half of the width of the screen. I cut off a few things. I have yet to uninstall as I want to give myself some time before I am fully committed to the machine. I want to make sure all is well with it. Therefore, I have not downloaded anything.

Keyboard
I am typing on the machine now and it feels like a Dell. The responsiveness is good. I am less than impressed with the touch-stick. As that was my main reason for choosing the Latitude. I guess it will take some time for me to adjust to it and alter it's responsiveness. I don't feel like I have much control with it at the time. The touchpad seems to suck...to me all touchpads' suck. So, there you have it.

I hate the the DEL key is all the way up top. I do not understsand why the have ALT/CNTRL keys @ both sides at the bottom. Maybe I can find a way to alter it's function.

Mobility
DAyyyyyUM this sucker is light. The size is perfect for using in the lap. As I am right now in my Executive Chair . It can easily be handled with one hand without a hitch. I know I will be extremely comfortable taking this machine to another location to do work and not feel like I am being worn down with weight.

Stovetop Opinions
As of right now I do not think I could cook anything on this system. I will say you can notice heat under the left palm area. I also feel heat from beneath on the left hand side. I am guessing the HDD is over there?!?!?!

Esthetics
Crowd, we have a winner. I love mixture of the charcoal grey and the light great border around the keyboard. I have to say. I wish the lid was on the charcoal grey color too.

Comments
I think this system will be a keeper. I am glad I chose the D620. For a while I had my heart set on the E1505 due to the pricing, but the portability and battery life happens to be enough to please me.

Support
I have had some problems already. This was purchased from Sm Biz Outlet. There were errors in the customer service and internet site not updating my purchase via My Accounts. After several hours of "GOING FREAKING CRAZY", most of the problems were "worked" out. I hope I never have this problem again or have to go after them like I did.

Dell one may forgive but NEVER forgets.

I guess I will follow up with pics and other reviews later... Excuse typos, spelling errors and grammar mistakes, the Latitude keyboard takes full responsibility

How much did you get it for?

Why are you not impressed with the screen?

1. approx $1900 but that includes XP Pro, Office 2003 Pro, AND Quickbooks Pro plus Complete Care + Accidental Damage for 3 years.

2. Screen The screen is not as bad as first mentioned. When the background is in all black is where imperfections are noticed. In any other color it is fine. I found the picture quality BETTER when the brightness is turned DOWN. There is a scratch on the screen; not sure if it was caused by me or shipped that way. I have too look to find it. However, the system I chose was Cert Refurb, so it is prone to minor imperfections.

All in all for the system I got with the specs I'm please... It's a keeper!

THE WEIGHT IS AMAZING...

Don't get the D620!!

I currently have it and it sucks!!! Well, the only thing that sucks is the screen. It's like a flash light that is flashing from the bottom of the screen where it's bright at the bottom of the screen and when you get to the top of the screen it's very dark. You have to move around just to see the top of the screen.

I'm currently in the middle of getting the D620 exchanged for the M1210.
The M1210 does have its problem on the screen too.

The screen will be much smaller, but the weight and thickness is the same as the D620.
That's alright if the screen is smaller I can live with a smaller just as long as the screen is clear and sharp.

Download Powerstripe, just turning down the lighting using the Fn keys suck.

My D620 arrived Friday (its now sunday).
2.0Ghz, 2G 667mhz, 80G 7200rpm, 2945 wifi, xga+1440x900, NVX 110 video

I bought this via the outlet and it works great! My only complaint is the 4 cell battery gives about 2 hours running wifi with the screen turned down about 1/2 brightness. edit: unfortunately, it was what was in the system or I would have gotten the 6 cell.

My D620 screen's fine. I don't have any of the issues people keeps talking about. You do get some weirdness if you have your face like a foot away from the screen but normal using distance is fine. Sometimes i think those with issues are the guys who are working with their face too close to the screen. Since I sold my M2000 I don't have a glossy laptop screen to compair to. However it's just slightly less nice then my 19 inch desktop LCD by LG. I did try to compair to my axim x50v's screen and I think the glossy screen hides some of the effects from viewing at an angle. Specifically at angles rather then seeing the screen clearly you get the reflection from the glossy screen.

As for the battery 6 cell about 4 to 5 hours depending on what's on. I always use my screen on lowest when I am on battery. So I like the matted screen it's great when working at low brightness.

You can feel some heat on the left palm rest but it's a huge improvement from my previous compaq M2000 and the previous Toshiba Tecra issued to me by previous work place.

I had this machine too, just when I was getting to know it, I found out it was stolen. I bought it on CL, but the idiot who sold it to me, is in jail now, after I photo IDed him. Just a warning to others, if you are going to buy a dell machine, ask for the service tag, so you can inquire about the status of the computer first, and make sure its not hot. I was lucky, cause the criminal was not the brightest light on the tree, and I got my equipment back (we did a trade) and the 100 dollars I added to even the deal, was given back to my by dell, for doing the right thing when I found out it was stolen, and returned it to the owners.
