Toshiba 5200 problems

Thread Starter
I have a Toshiba 5200 which I am having display problems with.

when turning the laptop the image on the screen has some verticla lines and vertical garbage and most times IF windows loads it is slow in refresh and freezes often.

Sometimes when the screen tilt angle is changed the screen goes black. In addition the display driver in windoiws shows VGASAVE and does not show the proper adapter.

I have a feeling something is loose in there and would like to be able to look at the dispplay adapter cable from the laptop to the screen, but I don't know how to take the laptop apart.

I have been able to remove the keyboard, but am unsure of how to take the LCD screen apart.

As well although I have removed all of the screws from the back, I can't seem to get the plastic cover on the bottom of the unit off.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks,
Reza

If you've got the keyboard off you should be able to see the LCD connector cable, normally two; power supply from the inverter and the main ribbon type (larger one), there located roughly central towards the back of the machine and can be seen quite easily. Make sure the powers disconnected and remove the battery then remove the connectors blow out any dust and then reseat them. That may fix the problem.
Also as far as disassembly check for screws you have missed behind stickers on the base and sometimes inside the ram slot.

Also there are a few very good disassembly guides HERE see if you can find something similar to your model.

For the drivers, most toshibas have a folder on the C: Drive called drivers in there you will find a sub folder called display which should have your stock toshiba setup file as an executable.

Post how you get on,

Good luck and welcome to the forums.

I own a 5205 which is the American market 5200.

From memory, to disassemble one of these laptops you'll first need to remove the battery, hard disk cover & hard disk, memory cover, wireless cover and disconnect both wireless antenna wires (if so equipped).

There are 19 case screws to remove (24 including the hard disk, memory and wireless covers). Of the 19 case screws, 4 are inside the battery cavity and 3 are inside the hard disk cavity.

That done, carefully remove the black trim panel above the keyboard and the 2 screws holding the keyboard.

Remove the keyboard and carefully disconnect its cable.

With the main board partially exposed sans keyboard, remove the 4 gold colored screws visible: 1 for the fixed optical drive, 1 for the style bay, and 2 just under the power button panel.

Disconnect the video cable (it's the huge one that's hard to miss) then disconnect the two ribbon cables running under the palm rest. Finally disconnect the ribbon cable running out from under the power button panel as well as the cable that's plugged into the right side of the power button panel.

Carefully pull both wireless antenna cables up from the little oval channel they run through just above the Style Bay.

Finally carefully unsnap both case halves from each other to separate them. Snaps are located along the battery cavity and all along the leading edge of the palm rest.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Wow,

Thanks for the greetings and advice guys. I appreciate it.

Having thought a bit more about my problem, I am no longer sure if there is a loose cable or if there is something rong with my video adapter.

I plugged in an external monitor to the laptop and it behaved the same way with garbled vetical lines through the screen and not showing any information for the display adapter in the windows setup area.

Coincidentally I was installing a video plugin to watch the Casino Royale movie trailer when all of these problems started. The laptop hung up in the middle of installing the plugin.

Any thought on what may be things I can look at?

I have tried refreshing the OS and still the same issue exists!!!
