2 minutes out of the box and already problems...

Just got my first Mac (macbook) and I am already having problems.

I've been running on AC since I unpacked it and the battery icon has an X through it. There is a battery installed and I can check it's charge using the button&LEDs and if I unplug the AC it does switch to battery power.

But why can't I see a charging status, percentage to go, or whatever on the battery icon.

Thanks!

i wouldnt even mess with it. call the store, and ask for a brand new one.

pulling a brand new 1100$ notebook out of a box, and having a power issue with it right away is not acceptable to most people, def. not me!

Yeah, packing it up right now. Really upset about this.

Went online and found a couple posts about this problem from people who said there battery was "dying"...not a good sign.

I am really, really glad I bought it from a Best Buy that has a no-hassle return policy. Only problem is, this was there last one..

Makes me want to go back to PC. Not that it was a software issue but still..

Understand your frustration, but this can happen with PCs too...today's notebooks are fairly complex, and this probably comes with a higher probability of having an early problem. Hope you get a replacement soon.

No, you're right. I've had crappy PCs too. Just that this was a terrible experience for a first time Mac user.

Either way, thanks for he quick reply.

I'm going to give it a few more minutes as it has started to "calculate" the battery charge...and I'm told this can take a while.

Good point...it's probably also worth leaving it plugged in for several hours to see what happens. Is the little light on the Power Adapter (where it connects to the MacBook) orange while it's charging? It will turn green if it fully charges.

Well it didn't work even after I tried removing the battery and reintalling it a few times, unpluging/repluging the AC adapter, and playing around with power settings.

Returned the computer, drove to the other Best Buy and picked up another.

This one is perfect. Battery is charging and showing a percentage.

This one doesn't have any screen blemishes either (the old one had a dark band about an inch long in the rh corner.

Now I am VERY happy!

Yes, a great ending indeed. I am impressed with this OS too - really intuitive. I mean, every so often I just instinctively click on something hoping it will do what I want...and it does. Cool.

From my experience (which has been a steady 6 hours with both A/C and battery power with everything on - bluetooth, NIC, etc.), it's no warmer than my past laptops and cooler then the Dell 1710.

It certainly won't be too hot to use on my lap and the fan hasn't run yet from what I can tell.

Hope that helps.

And one other thing; take your wallet. This laptop is gorgeous and extremely well made. Just feels solid and expensive. LOVE IT!

i want to take the wallet, but im in the process of saving up for a new pontiac G6. car is first, then laptop.

its great to hear youve had a dell and it doesnt run as hot as the xps line, which ive used.

overall do you find the 1.83 adequate? id be going from a 1.6PM. im not really sure if itll be comparable though because ive been using windows with the 1.6, and id be using OSX with the 1.83, initially at least.

Honestly, the 1.83 is more than adequate. My old Dell 1710 was also of the 1.83 variety and it's an excellent processor. Very few could tell the difference between 1.83 and 2.0.

OSX is such a different beast that I think I'd have the same trouble you do in making any comparison between XP on something slower. OSX just moves so fluidly that it's hard to notice.

That said, OSX seems to run MUCH better on stock 512 than XP ever would. Maybe it's better power managment.

I think the only reason to get the 2.0 over the 1.83 processor is if you want the SuperDrive. I didn't need it, so opted for the 1.83 and it's fine.
i saw both the 1.83, and the 2.0 today in the store. id just get the 1.83. i already have a dvdrw burner in an external case, so its not really worth it to me to get one and spend the 200ish$ it is for tht.

Yes, the DVD burner is a non-issue for me too. Externals are fine, easier to replace, and portable.

not to mention CHEAPER

i for one never need a dvdrw on the go, hardly ever need a cdrw for that matter with flash drives today.
