Best time to buy?

I know it is always "wait until you need it" but I'm just wondering in the next few months when would be the best time?

I know Dell will most likely raise their prices for back to school , so I want to buy before that happens. But I've also heard rumors(?) of Core Duo dropping prices once merom comes out. Is the rumored price drop likely to happen before Dell ups the prices?

Of course, theres always the option of waiting a few weeks into the school year to buy, but does dell lower prices after school starts or keep the prices high for the holiday season?

Thanks for any information.

Intel drops the price of their processors annually, so anytime after that (and I believe it just happened recently for this year) would provide a slightly greater "value", as you could get a slightly faster CPU in your notebook for the same price. However, if you're trying to guess when Dell will release the next ultra savings coupon on the model you want, I can't help you there. However, their coupons do seem to be released with some frequency, so if you're paying attention, you should be able to take advantage of it the next time it comes around.

wtf you would think that dell wouldnt raise the prices for back to school. you would think they would have a bunch of sales and shit...

Unfortunately, to get a great deal, you have to wait until some 30-35% off coupons come out. Then, you have to be one of the lucky 4,000 before the coupon expires. Just keep checking the forums everyday so you don't miss out.

Well, they DO have sales. They just up the cost of the actual laptop and give a higher %/$ off to make it look like an awesome deal, when your really paying more then before.

Anyway, I'll just wait for Merom to come out(July 23rd I heard?) and hope the lowers the price of Core Duo, if it doen't I'll just bite the bullet and buy it anyway. I'm just worried that Dell will raise their prices before then...being only a few weeks before some school go back.

I'm also in the same situation. I have a 35% off coupon valid through the 12th of July and am about 90% sure I'm going to pick up an E1505 sometime before September. I'm hesitant to buy now since I hear Merom is just around the corner. Is it worth it to wait for Merom, buy it when it comes out, with a probably higher price, but still have 10-20% advantage over Core Duo and be 64bit? Do I wait for Merom to come out and buy when Core Duo's price drops? In any case I'm not sure if I'll find another 35% off deal, or if I wait too long before prices go up for back to school. Any advice would be appreciated.

The most reliable info I've heard is that, if you're buying before mid-late September, it's very unlikely you'll be able to get your hands on a Merom (especially at a semi-reasonable price).

or get on dealcatcher.com's mailing list and you can get notified of the most recent coupons. I think TechBargains, Fatwallet, and several others have a mailing list with the same deals, I like dealcatcher's website layout better personally.

I'm interested in a Latitude D820. Dell currently has a $450 off promotion, which is more than I've seen. Since the 30-35% coupons don't work for Latitudes, would this be a good a time to buy a D820?

Iam also thinking the same way. Will dell raise their price on August because of the back to school program?
does this mean the best prices will be at the end of july then?

Well there is the 35% +12% epp discount right now. That seems to be a pretty good deal and I can't see it getting any cheaper than that. I dunno get merom or just get this deal. So frustrating ...
