Yeah that should be cool , Kinza, you're thinking on getting this lappy ? It was realyl cheap over @ newegg, but I think it's kind of downclocked on the GPU to avoid heating, I was thinking over the asus S96j

i already picked it up so far i am content few off things about it, all probably mentioned before, the exhaust being on the right side, so u get hot air blowing on ur mouse hand, almost feels like a blow dryer going on low constantly, and then the fat32 partitions, had to break out partitionmagic, fixed that, ran CCleaner to adjust any registry problems, i took off almost all pre installed software except the ePower management program that acer provides, then loaded the omega drivers, dropped ati catalyst, installed trend micro, i think it provides the most complete protection and is one of the most less intrusive antiviruses, It's like a major pet peev when i get on a system and there are like 20 apps loaded in the taskbar, especially with a laptop, i need a fast load time, hmm oh yea i think i also bought into dual core hype, i think i was expecting more, because it seems like one of my AMD Athlon 2400+ 2ghz is giving me more speed, but i think it's cuz i went for the 1.66 ghz, i should have sprung for at least the 2ghz, but i think i will just wait until the merom dual core's are released and throw one those babies in there, hopefully by tax refund time a new cpu and another gb of ram, should keep me content, but all in all this is a slick laptop, and there will always be qwerks, but i mean it's something i'll adjust to, unless i got to sit down somewhere and personally test several laptop's i doubt i would find something perfect for me, but this is a decent system, just spend that extra 100 or 200 on newegg and get that additional 500mhz if you plan on this, and be ready to spend the day uninstalling and cleaning out old software, and running thru the msconfig and disabling non essential services and startup apps. Look on the brightside now i got those new nifty Windows Vista Compatible Stickers on here...didn't see that on other peoples pictures of there 5672...

Little on the Low side huh?

So this is a dissapointing read, i figured it would be in the 2000 range, like i heard others say, maybe i don't have this configed correct, it's the first time i have used 3Dmark06 any suggestions, maybe a possible conflict with omega drivers that might not work right with 3dmark???

I am seriously considering getting this lappy for college. Everyone please post up your scores so we have some consistent data?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I tried to download 3dMark06 and 05.. but those files were huge and both failed to finish downloading. Tried 2-3 times and gave up. =p

I'll keep on trying and will post my results.

yea, i just did a full format on my hdd, and installed windows xp pro on a ntfs file system, got all my drivers installed, epower, and launch manager, and as well as NOD32 as a virus scanner, and let me say this bad boy is flying now, at first i thought i could just combine the 2nd two partitions, the acerdata and my C: drive, but then i thought, even if converted to ntfs, i am screwing myself, because the PQSERVICE paritions (acer recovery partition) is at the beginning of the HDD in fat32, so it would ultimately still slow my system down, it was like having a badly fragmented hdd, this is my theory, but that has to be removed, and a fresh instal done, this increasing load times, as they are coming from the beginning of the drive instead of further back. my processes are now 31, and this is flying, seriously, imma hafta redownlod 3dbenchmark, and check what my overall increase was, but like i heard someone mention before on these forums, damn numbers if your system is fast to you.

Have you tried it with games? How good is it with them?

I'm planning to buy one, but I'm afraid I've read great reviews and some really bad ones, and I'm a bit lost here.
I've been playing Oblivion the past few nights. For the most part, it runs great. It does get pretty warm on the handrest.

I noticed there were some graphic glitches while playing.. like the texture of the floors would drastically change.. I'm running the stock ATI catalyst driver and haven't updated it yet.. so that may be it. I'll probably go with Omegadrivers that I hear most people are using.

Another issue was that about an hour or so into the game, the computer acted like the AC cord was unplugged and reduced the brightness of the screen and everything felt alot slower. I would exit the game at that point, and upon reaching desktop, the screen would adjust and be at 100% brightness again. Checking with Notebook Hardware Control, the CPU temp wasn't high at all. The highest i've seen was around 67c.

That happened twice... and I decided to change the ePowerManagement settings by increasing the hd shut-off time, standby and hybernation times. My Standby time at the time was set to 1hour and hybernation at 2hrs.

Since I've adjusted the settings.. this was last night.. and I've only played a bit over an hour after that.. everything seemed ok again. No so much graphic glitching and the "power reduction" didn't happen either.

I'll report back either way next day or two.

But other then that, everything runs great. =p

Thanks pal...

I think I'm going to buy this one, altough the bad reviews. I think the good stuff overcome the bad things. The only thing I'm worried about is the temperature, so I'll have to put my eyes on that.

Thanks again.

As far as temp goes, I don;t know how anyone can type for extended amounts of time. The right handrest gets pretty warm just idling. Luckally I don't have to use it for typing except when I'm surfing the net (I also use a wireless mouse). And I only use the left handrest for the games I play. I'll probably end up getting a mini fan to blow on the keyboard. Hopefully the hybrid HDD's KinzaKracker was talking about in another thread will help the heat problem, because the HDD is whats causing the heat on the handrest.
Yeah, it really is a great laptop with everything it has for the price. I paid $1200 INCLUDING a 3 year total protectiong warrenty. Anything comparable will put you over $1500.

The heat does make it a bit uncomfortable. Having an USB mouse helps.. but the touchpad doesn't really get that hot on my unit. The handrests gets alot warmer.. and I'll probably hook up my USB wireless keyboard/mouse on the laptop and it'll take care of that annoyance. =)

I plan to follow the advice of various people and do a clean install of Win XP Pro and drivers to get rid of the partitions and all the "bloatware."

I expect I'll be happy with this laptop for at least the next 3 years.

Oh, while people have said the sound quality from the speakers aren't very good, and I agree, they are laptop speakers.. what do you expect? =p but they aren't all that bad really. plus, if you plug in a earphone/headset or external powered speakers, you might be surprised at how good the sound quality is!

I was debating over this or have a Asus s96j built. I'm glad I went with the 5672 x1600. Now I have just about all the bells and whilstles, full coverage under the warrenty, and don't have to worry about software/component compatibility issues... oh and I'm saving a few hundred $.

If you aren't in a hurry, wait for me to do my clean install and try the omega drives over the weekend then run the games after that to see if all the issues are resolved before I can wholeheartedly recommend this bad boy.

Phil.
I'm not that hurry. A friend of mine is going to USA next week, so I have time (I'm from Argentina). I'll wait for your data when you perform your clean install using the omega drives.

I can't find the 5672 with x1600 anywhere. I found the model with x1400 for around $1050 in Pricegrabber, but no luck with the x1600 version.

Thanks again for the info.

yea about the 3rd day of owning my 5672, i did a full format, and said oh well, like mentioned in another thread, if you call acersupport and say you are computer savvy and all your partitions are currupt even the pqservice partition they will send you out a 'Actual" recovery disk that was one my priorities, just to have "in case" maybe i wanna sell this sometime later down the road, but not anytime soon as i think this baby is gonna last me a minute, and i think althought the heat is higher the equipment is rated to handle higher temperatures, and yea, just keep a little desk fan aime on ur armrest while u type, and it does wonders.. the following games run very well on here... "CounterStrike, and anything on the Source engine..HL2, DOD, RED ORCHESTRA,etc... age of empires III, Enemy territory..lol (it's a classic ) COD2, Rainbow Six Lockdown, Act of War: High Treason,Farcry, Heroes of the Pacific I got Ghost Recon: AW laying around here, but i didn't bother to install it, as i didn't care for the gameplay, but i mean i got it to run on a athlon 2400+ with a softmodded 9800se, (on the lowest possible settings) so i'am sure it will run on here, as it has the same requirements as obilivion minus being PhysX compatible. but yea, only got a few first person shooters, i am still playing mostly older games, age of empires II axis and allies, even warcraft II lol...but yea i run alotta 3D apps, autocad '07, 3D Studio Max 8, and Poser 6 all flawless.. and now i got everything on here the way i like, i run 30 processes, and use 205mb of ram, and usually don't even take the ePower mgmt off of medium cpu settings unless it's 3D, something 3D, but you get this machine your gonna be content with this, i think the heat is a factor, but peope inflate it into such a bigger issue wait until Intel Releases Quad Core Processors imagine what kinda heat that will put out, take the heat on the left side now and double it..lol hopfully a better cooling and heat dispursement technology's will come about, but like most things, it's not really invented until there is a need, now that these things are getting more powerfuly, there gonna get hotter, besides i think we are on a big jump like we havent' seen since the mid to late 90's we kinda been in a technological recession, and with intel gaining stride again, and alotta announcements of new things to come, and even apple will get some credit for pushing the envelop on making visual pleasing as well as able to handle incredible workloads, and new battery types are being developed that use micro bacteria, and last almost 10 times longer then current battery systems on the market...lol damn i got on a rant, but yea you see where i am going with this..uh i think.
Prexus, im interested in what you said about it being slowing down...
In order to check correct temperatures, you need to run prime95 or another program that keeps the cpu at 100%.

i think that your cpu temperature while playing oblivion was higher than the one you saw, as temperature drops dramatically if you were using 100% and suddenly not anymore.

can you check if your performance hit was cause by heat? in my current travelemate i do have a temp issue. my temp will go high and then after a certain temp, it will downclock the cpu for about 20 seconds and reduce temps. this happens a lot while gaming, but i think your problem might be very different, because you said you only noticed until an hour of playing.

im thinking of getting this machine, and i want to avoid another acer that overheats and get performance hit

i dont mind the heat tho, as long as everything works, heat is nothing to be concerned about. (and my current travelmate is most probably hotter than this acer anyways, since my cpu reaches 84°C easily )

I played for about 2.5 hours last night. The "slow down" did not happen during that time and everything ran smoothly but there were still graphic glitches in Oblivion running at 1024x768 with the stock ATI driver that I have not upgraded yet.

Although I like the Notebook Hardware Control... I don't really know if it's not trying to adjust my CPU speed... But I think by changing the ePower settings back to the defalt: never shutdown anything when AC is plugged in and running at max speed and screen brightness, that "fixed" the "slow down" during game play. I'll see if I can narrow down which setting is causing that slow down.

I'll have more time to run a longer playing session over the weekend to make sure heat isn't causing the computer to power down.

Also still working on getting the 3dMarks downloaded and should have the results in the next few days.

Ryzeki,

I'd get the ASUS S96J. I'm going to have a chance to compare them when my sister comes to visit, bringing her 5672 in a week or so, but I put together my S96J a couple nights ago and I love it. Hot? Nope! A little warm but that's it, under my right hand, but not uncomfortable. Hottest the CPU has gotten, that I've seen so far, is 59C.

The speakers, stink. tiny tiny sound, but other than that... and I'm going to see what I can do about those

The price for the S96J has come down quite a bit, even if you get it pre-built.

I apologize, I have no screenshots because I uninstalled 3dMark to save disk space. 3DMark05 score was 1635 on Aspire 5672WLMi w/ Core Duo T2300, 2GB @ 533mhz, x1400 w/ 128MB dedicated, 100GB 5.4k SATA HDD.

I got mine Tuesday, it's been on constantly since. I spent a couple hours playing the new PREY demo (*plays great by the way, and defaults on auton detect on high settings) and have zero heat issues. This is the 6th notebook I've had and it runs no warmer than all of them. (x1600 version that has a late May manuf date and has all the latest bios and drivers, in fact newer than any I can find on Acer in the US/Europe or Asia web sites)
