Aspire 5672WLMI Benchmarks - Page 2

Yeah you are right Krista, i am getting the S96j, there is not looking elsewere for a better lap for the price right now

How much cheaper is it by putting the laptop together myself? and do i need any special equipement?? i dont have anything right now, not even decent screwdrivers

still there is always the option of prebuilt... but due to my nature... i really feel like putting the thing together myself heh.

the problem would be that i live in Mecixo, so if i screw up or if a component comes badly.. its gonna suck.

Should i put it myself together or should i order it prebuilt?? as i said before, im leaning heavily on building it myself

It was less than $200 at Newegg for the 3 year warranty/protection plan which is cheap as dirt, still less tha $1300 for the whole shooting match.

Exactly Cerich! =) The package/deal is just almost impossible to beat.

I considered the s96j. Yeah, for few hundred more, I'd build a more powerful laptop... but then.. it doesn't have integrated bluetooth or wireless network. I'd have to buy a wireless card with then takes up the express card slot and prevents me from using another card if I need to.

Right now, I have a wireless broadband card in the slot. Anywhere I go with the laptop I can use either connections to get online w/out having to swap out cards. =)

Back to the subject of performance... I logged about another 2.5 hours playing Oblivion with no issues except 2-3 small graphic glitches. (I'm still on the old stock ATI drivers).

Well i can buy the S96j for $1230dlrs with:

Intel Yonah Core Duo T2400 1.83ghz
Corsair 1GB DDR-2 667mhz SODIMM
100gb 5400rpm S-ATA
IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (Tri-mode 802.11a/b/g)
Gigabit LAN 10/100/1000
Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound
Ati Mobility Radeon X1600 256mb (450/400)
8x DVD-RW Dual layer Super Multi
15.4 Glare screen Color Shine WXGA 1280x800
Built In camera
bluetooth adapter (USB)
Warranty: 1st Year GenTech, 2nd Year Intel Limited Warranty

That sounds pretty good to me, at least i wont have to deal with heat issues, and well, gaming performance its greater here, which was my main concern. It does have wireless card, what do you mean it doenst have?

anyways, i have a win xp cd, but if i didnt i would have to add 145dls for windows. Also if you want to extend to 3 years the warranty of Gentech you have to add 125drls.

if i decide to put it together myself, i can probably save around $100 or a little more $$$
post #25 of 40
I basically did it with a really tiny screw driver (phillips) and the equivalent of tweezers (for when I dropped a screw or something like that).

You can configure the system I got (without Windows) at Gentechpc for $1200. My total was about 1124. If you're concerned about putting it together And want arctic silver, and their testing and warranty... I'd go with Gentech, personally. I enjoyed doing it myself, but I'm wondering what hoops I'd have to jump through for warranty. Probably Mwave would handle the bare bones and everything else would go by parts / manufacturer warranty.

I want ahead and used the stock cooling pads, but I think I'm going to open it back up this weekend and put some arctic silver on the gpu. There isn't a thermal pad where the heatsink thingy makes contact on that.

Also, once you have it, download the omega drivers. I went from a 3DMark05 of 3600 something, to 3917 just by doing that instead of using the driver that came on the CD.

Just saw your post. Did you go with the slot load dvd burner? I got the tray one.

Really if you do decide to put it together, use the manual and it's pretty easy. The screw holes line up perfectly. It's very well made.

As to Oblivion... the wife of one of my co-workers borrowed my new laptop today (eek) because she needs one and was thinking of buying a decked out (expensive) XPS. I installed the Omega drivers yesterday... She installed Oblivion. It detected the graphics card and selected "High" settings, all by itself She Loved how it looked and played.

I'm not trying to put down the Acer. I recommended it to my sister and she's satisified with it at this point, but I love my new ASUS machine.

The S96J has built in wi-fi. You just need to purchase it with the wi-fi option.

I spent approx $60 more on my S96J, and got a faster processor and better video card and a machine that doesn't run burning hot (I play WoW with it on my lap) Bluetooth... I can live without

lol I didn't want to turn this into a "which is better" contest. We were all in the same shoe and just chose different paths. I think we are all happy with the decisions we made.

Obviously some of you who are expert gamers will no doubt feel the difference between the machines, some might like to build your own system with components you pick out... and of course some of you don't need all the extras or the piece of mind of a full warrenty...

Anyway, lets not stry too far from the subject of this thread in respect for the original poster and stick with info related to the 5672wlmi benchmarks shall we?

Long weekend comming up! May we all enjoy our new toys.. except those of you who still need info to decide which to get.. =p

Yup, I did the same thing. Maybe I'm not use to laptops in general. It's my first one.

The results are in. =) I spent alot of time over the weeking playing with my new 5672x1600. Got rid of the old ATI drivers and installed Omega... didn't reformat the drives so my system is still loaded with alot of the bloatware.

Think I said the graphic glitches were gone, and they are gone with no more issues. The game still "slows" down once in a while but I'm convinced it's software/video resolution setting in-game issue and not induced by heat since I've had it happen just 10-15min into the game after I tab in/out screens. And it seem to happen more at higher resolutions.

I also downloaded 3dMarks05 and ran it. The score I got was 2785. I might do a reformat to really clean up the system and rerun 3dMarks05...

But, I've been playing Oblivion almost every night since the weekend and I'm really happy with everything. Everything runs so smooth that I'm not sure just how much better it could get.

I may upgrade the RAM to make it 2gig high speed ram... what's the difference between PC5300 and PC5400? They appear to have the same specs on paper...

That's it for now. =)

5300 and 5400 are the same, its just some companies round the speed differently.

one runs at 533mhz the other at 667mhz, glad to hear a someone besides myself is pleased with there machine, also if you are thinking upgrades a higher rpm hdd is plausable, as the one's in our machines are only 5400rpm. and once the next phase of core duo processors "merom" are realeased this fall, there should be lower power consumption, which will provide longer batter life. and then a flash/disc harddrive is to be released early '07, which will lower power consumption, also, and produce less heat, might be a bit pricey at first, but i bet they will catch on quick, as seagate just did a press release for a 1 terabyte hdd, the main reason i was swayed to this laptop was enuff space for me to do upgrades, well it will keep me up to date for approx 2-3 years which is average span a user holds on to a laptop these days, before they purchase another. oblivion must have the same specs as ghost recon advanced warfare, as i have the same issues, but am confident it is more a setting in the resolution...try running BF2 on it the 5672, i have noticed alotta of complaints coming that it works for about a week, then while it loads the map, it crashes to desktop, for no reason, giving no explanation.
KK - no, your thinking of 6400. 5300 and 5400 are the same things bud.
Yeah, it did look like both 5300 and 5400 had the same speed at 667. The price were also similar. Guess I'll just go with the most popular one from newegg.com and have my friend order it at wholesale for me. =)

I also just downloaded 3DMarks06 and PCMarks05. I'll share my numbers next day or so.

Here are the numbers on my 5672 x1600 with stock Acer software configuration except I'm running the Omega drivers and Win XP Pro.

PCMarks 05: 3282
3dMarks 05: 2784 - 2795
3dMarks 06: 1244

I have the printscreens of the results but too lazy to find a site to host and link... =p

Looks I'm in line with results from people who has done the reformatting and clean drivers install... so unless someone has much higher numbers, I'm not going to bother doing the reformat/install.

It's official !! ! ! ! PREY runs FLAWLESS on the 5672, i put it on all the highest settings, the very max of everything, and it ran great, only thing i didn't do is go max with the resolution stayed at about 1024 x 7698 i snapped a few digicam shots real quick, but i was kinda real involved to go any more indepth then that at the time this was full version not demo, and didn't have lag, or anything the 2hrs i played, had cpu on max, and everything here is the link to where i took the pics and posted them on another thread http://www.notebookforums.com/post2268824.html
post #37 of 40
I've heard that the 5672wlmi cuts the cpu to save power when un plugged. It cuts it down too 999mhz. I heard this somewhere but cant remeber
post #38 of 40
That happens with all Core Duos. It's customizable though.

Actually, it happens on any Intel CPU with SpeedStep (AMD also has the same function). It depends on what power profile you have selected - Always on forces the CPU into full speed no matter what, while the Laptop works great both plugged and unplugged.
...Bit it also drains the battery quicker.
