Hibernate does just save the current state of memory to the hard drive and the completely shuts the computer down. As far as I know battery has nothing to do with it, you could pull the battery out and a year later just plug in AC power and boot it right back up.
That is my understanding of it. I guess if someone else casts doubt I will just try it myself, hibernate and yank the battery out, then try to boot up and see if it resumes where it left off. Simple enough to try.
