Toshiba M35-S456 blank screen at boot...please help

Hi, last week the screen of my laptop went blank after I left it for 10 minutes during normal use. since there was no response from keyboard or mouse, I restarted it and got the toshiba splash screen as usual. but then the screen went blank again and then nothing happened. all the LEDs come on properly, the fan runs properly etc, but nothing on the screen. here are the things I have tried:
removing battery and powering up.
removing battery and pressing power button for 30 secs.
connecting to external monitor...nothing comes on it.
i can access boot menu by pressing F12. i put in windows setup CD and also knoppix live but nothing happens after I choose 'boot from cd'.

now suddenly when I turn on the laptop, I get the splash screen and then blue vertical lines across the screen and then it freezes. I dont understand what the problem could be. any suggestions would be really helpful. is the mobo gone bad? or is the video card? I'm out of warranty and not willing to spend too much since I'm a student. btw, I've owned the machine for a year and a half.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the video is sick. Try selecting "boot in vga mode" from the boot menu.

This model has a video chip integrated into the motherboard. So, a bad video card means a bad motherboard. Try to hook up the external monitor again. Do you see the blue line on the external monitor too? If yes, then the system board is bad.
BTW, Knoppix rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the replies. the external monitor is completely blank, dont see anything. so is there anything i can do about the bad video? or a new mobo is the only solution?? also I dont have a boot on vga in boot menu, that is when i press f12, i see boot from hd, cd, network, external device.

Boot from VGA comes when you press F8 as windows starts.

once the blue lines appear after the splash screen, I cannot do anything. i have not been able to access the boot options from F8, I cannot see windows loading...just blue lines. can i disable my video card any other way?? i cant even access the bios.
