Integrated graphics?

OK can you guys give me advice on a notebook with integrated graphics that has a 14" screen or larger? I have been looking at the Sony VAIO FJ series, are there any others that are in the same category? Thanks for you help.

There are tons of them. Do you have any other requirements (for example 2nd battery, removable optical drive, docking station, dvi poort, firewire port, and so on, cpu preferences) and how much do you want to spend?

em, if you don't care about graphics (seeing that you want an integrated card) then any notebook fits for you. Asking for a notebook with an integraded card doesn't make sence.

alky.....im gonna be the first to suggest dell. they are pretty decent, and a 1405 can be had for 700ish$ with a 1yr warranty.

not a bad deal for the basic user!

i myself am going to buy a 13.3" macbook in a month.

Asus Z71A. 5.5 hour battery life with one battery, probably 9 hours with the optical drive bay battery, 15.4" screen, very good build quality, cheap.

Yeah I actually owned a Z70VA, a very good laptop, but I found myself underclocking the CPU to 800mHz most of the time and underclocking the GPU as well, to reduce fan noise. I have come to the conclusion that an integrated solution would work best, I need one that looks good and has low power comsumption. I do not game at all, the most my laptop works is when I have iTunes, Mozilla, and AIM on at the same time. My max spending limit is about $2,000.

Why integrated graphics?

Cuz I don't play games on it.

most lowend laptops has intergrated video. but i wouldnt recommand sony because they are expensive

alky just cuz you dont play games, doesn't mean that you still wont enjoy the performacne boost. of course it doesn't make sense for you to grab a X1600 or a 7800 or something, but along the lines of X300 might be right up your alley.

Right now I'm trying to decide between the Sony FJ and the Asus W3V, leaning towards the Sony coz it runs cooler and thus quieter, any suggestions? And btw if I buy the W3V, which has the ATI X600, is there a way to disable it or take it out of the laptop? Thanks.

sure you can disable it... if you want to look at a blank screen all the time

if you dont play 3d games or use CAD-type programs then i would DEFINITELY get integrated graphics. the dedicated graphics card might play DVDs slightly better, but IMO its not worth the loss in battery life (dedicated cards tend to take a lot).

What about the Z62F. Isn't it pretty much a W3V in a different colored case with an integrated GPU?

I am not sure why, but you seem stuck on the idea that a real GPU will suck battery and that the integrated won't. That is true for the high end cards while gaming, but something more moderate in the x1600 and less lines can be REALLY powered down. Powerplay can drastically reduce clocks and voltage use, to that of any "integrated" setup. And keep in mind, that if you ever plan on using Vista, you will NEED a moderatly good card if you wish to have Vista looks like its supposed to- even if you never game on it once..

Geez...how much battery life do you need?

OK so your saying the W3V can be configured in a way so that it would use the same power as an integrated graphics card? If I did that how noisy would it be compared to the Sony FJ, which has integrated?

Typically speaking, integrated graphics run cooler and with less power used than dedicated cards. I have yet to see any benchmarks to the contrary. I also keep hearing that you can't play games at all on integrated graphics. Again, not true. While I am sure Battlefield 2 or FEAR won't run on my integrated graphics, WoW and Rise of Nations runs just fine. IMO (emphasis on Opinion) integrated graphics are a valid choice for power and heat savings.

resale on something would be a little higher with a ded. card in it right?

i still think the 1405 is a damn good choice. and it doesnt cost u 2k$ either
