people with notebook as only computer. what precautions do you take?

i've had desktops for many years. this year i've switched to only having a notebook. what precuations do you take?

do you passwork lock everything, or just boot up, or just certain files? or do you only keep sensitive documents on a external drive? i'm wondering what other people do when you only have a notebook because it adds the factor of being stolen/lost that desktops don't have.

my lappy is just around. lets just say i don't leave it "around" , its on some security more or less. do i take any security measures out of the ordinary? no not really. you can't go through life paranoid and scared....just live it!

Keep it with me at all times. Don't leave it where I'm not in visual contact with it (except at home).

Backup all data to a portable hard drive/DVDs every week or two.

Get theft insurance, if you can and it is cheap (add it onto the homeowner's insurance).

Use TrueCrypt (free) which will encrypt the entire hard drive with military-grade encryption (AES, I believe) -- same as a PowerBook/MacBook. This is the best option, since it is seamless. However, your disk throughput will be a little reduced.

I don't really keep data so sensitive that I can't afford to lose it on my hard drive. I would at least keep it on CDs/DVDs/portable hdds that I keep with me.

I'd also recommend getting a flashdrive/jumpdrive/thumbdrive/whatever you call it, to back up sensitive files from your laptop and keep it with you on your key chain. That way, even if your computer DOES get stolen, you'll still have a copy of your most sensitive/important files with you.
Besides, 1GB jumpdrives are really cheap now.

I second the above ideas... and would suggest an external hard drive enclosure...
Apricorn EZ-BUS-DTC-KIT is a GOOD one:

Here's the DT version for only $24.99... which is a VERY good price btw!:

I use:
1 gig Attache drive for transporting data.
40 gig WD password for portable (I rarely carry my laptop, just this drive, it has all my data on it, I work near computers all day and just need to plug this drive in.
120 gig 3.5" maxtor in generic enclosure for hard core backing up (not needed much anymore)

Since I DO have a desktop, I backup to a network share.
IMO: you should get an external drive to backup to
