I'm just wondering if anyone here that uses firefox which uses alot of memory?

Mine is at 50mb right now, that seems alot when compared to IE which is about 25mb

Yeah it does use up alot, but I dont mind, its a great browser.

wtf, my firefox just not used up 112mb of RAM, now I quit it and restart and its taking 50ish.

Maybe time to start looking for another browser.....

the reason why IE take up less is because it uses windows libraries which are already preloaded anyway. firefox (due to its non-windows origins) needs to load its own runtime libraries so that 1 - makes it fatter 2- makes it slower to start.

one solution to the problem is to use Swiftfox (www.getswiftfox.org)... it overall has better performance and faster start-up time than regular firefox, though it obviously does not help with the size as i am currently taking up 61mb.

Opera does take up a bit less, and its actually a faster browser, although due to the lack of very nice plugins that firefox has.....you could find it rather limited after enjoying firefox.

option #2 is you can WAIT. One of the biggest development goals for firefox 2.x is to slim it down.

The reason why FF is using so much memory is a memory leak in the programming that has been known about for sometime. Unfortunately the fix usa posted only works for about 1/2 people me not being one of them. Throughout the day I just close ff and wait a few seconds then open it back up to free up that memory. The other day after some intensive pr0...I mean laptop research I was up to about 400MB.

lol...my bad. i thought there was a windows version too.

well...you can always use Cygwin...but thats just more bloat.

...after some googling i tried to find an optimized windows build, so far no luck

Meh, the fix I tried only worked till I closed and restarted firefox.

it is so "à la mode" to jump on the bandwagon of bastling Firefox for "its so called" memory leak. well a few procedures have been offered to restrain Firefox from "hogging" the memory, but do think about it a little bit:
1. was this extra memory that Firefox "hogs" hurting ur system performance? - i doubt it
2. any "smart" app would look around and hogs as much memory as it can to get the extra mile
3. XP is smart enough to allocate memory accordingly when certain apps need the extra umpf. So in a way, XP is doing a good job in refereeing system/programme apps performance.
It is just like a good game, it would know how to scrape memory from "idle" processes to give the users good experience.

my 2 pences -
cheers ...

first of all, not all of us are using XP

now for my littel rant:
i think Firefox is to blame for this, its the only browser that regularly eats up 50+ MB. Others like Opera take ~30mb, and Dillo takes up only 10mb! I think this has more to do with how fat the Gecko engine has gotten since release 0.8... can't wait for Firefox 3.0 (so i heard 2.x series is just an interlude)... should be a little more managable.

hmmm im running win xp sp2

i went to ebay google wiki some other sites and my task manager shows cpu 1-10 and mem usage around fluctuating around 15-24mb all is good

i noticed when i came to nbf today the fans were kickin in which was odd so i check task manager and showed cpu 40-50 mem usage 27mb so i did spysweep and now when i come here to nbf cpu goes to 16-20 and mem usage 34mb & fans are silent

ahh as i type this right now i just noticed the fans kick in for a moment and cpu for firefox is at 46-50 mem 33mb , now i gotta check to see whats up , its only this site right now making my fans kick in

sager....i've kinda been monitoring my ram usage from site-to-site as well and it seems NBF is one of the chunkier ones.
