On the verge of buying a Sony SZ, but I have a few last questions

1) How badly does it affect performance if I decide to stick with 2 x 1GB 533MHz RAM instead of manually upgrading to 677MHz.

2) Also, I have noticed that the SZ281 does not offer to upgrade from a T2500 to a T2600 processor, so does the T2600 have a significant performance gain over a T2500?

3) Is there a significant difference between a 5400 rpm harddrive and a 7200 rpm, and how much more noise and heat does the 7200 rpm harddrive output?

4) Finally, I have heard rumors that the SZ series tends to have chipping paint. I'm wondering that if this is true, and if it is, how badly does it chip.

Thanks in advance!

1) You are going to save a ton of money by getting the least ammount you can, and then get RAM from Newegg yourself.

2)It's just around 150mhz increase, it really dosen't.

3)7200 just boots fatser, loads quicker, and stuff like that, For the Internet browers and "I just need a laptop" users who wont be photoediting, movie editing, loading games, it really dosen't matter.

Thanks a lot, but I'm still wondering about the chipping paint, is that still a major problem?

There is no chipping on my SZ. Are you talking about the paint being worn off at the corners, discussed here? I think that's just caused by constant wear. I can see how one would rest the edge of their palm there while using the touchpad. The paint isn't actually chipped, just worn off, and when you rub your palm against it all the time that may happen.

Thanks again.

The laptop I want is the Sony Vaio SZ280 through Portable One with a 7200rpm HD:

I have also been looking at the 281, but it is a lot more expensive. Do you think that the $200 increase is worth it when upgrading from SZ280 to SZ281? Also, is there a website that lets me customize the frequency of RAM (to 677 MhZ) and the processor of an SZ280/281? Thanks in advance.

The only difference is that the SZ281 comes with the premium carbon fiber lid while the SZ280 comes with the regular carbon fiber lid. Currently all SZ models do not support the 667mhz frequency. If you use 667mhz memory it will be clocked down to 533mhz. Other than P1, there are no websites that will allow you to customize the premium series SZ. You will need to do the upgrades yourself.

Thanks a lot, but I have one final question:

Is there any significant performance loss if I stay with 533Mhz instead of 677 (for light gaming, but lots of multi-tasking)?
It wouldn't matter which ram you chose because as of right now the SZ can only use the 533mhz frequency. But to answer your question, yes, the higher frequency ram does make a difference.

Thanks again!
Last question:

I have noticed that if I decide to upgrade from 5K4H rpm HD to a 7K2H rpm one, The interface will be downgraded from SATA to ATA6. Is there any significant performance loss if this is the case? (I will be doing some serious multi-tasking, programming Java Apps, and light gaming on this notebook).

id chooose 5400 rpm drive because it will be quieter, less warm and more battery life. i mean i have a acer ferrari 4005 laptop w/ 100gb 5400rpm hd and 16mb cache and i can play all my games/ multitask just fine. just make sure you get ample amount of ram and see if the hd they offer have anything w/ 16mb cache. that will offer you quite a nice speed boost while doing heavy taskin and saving those 3 things i mentioned above for going w/ 54--rpm hd.

smartest thing to do is just get standard amount of ram sony offers at no charge then just go to newegg and purchase the ram yourself cuz manufacture rips you off on upgrades and you cann sell back the factory ram for lil cash.

remember to get atleast 1gig ram. i ran vista on my laptop and 1gig was barely feasible for it to run smooth (2.0ghz amd turion64/1gig ram/100gb hd/ x700 ati gpu..) i ran vista on my pc (3.0ghz p4/80gig 7200rpm/512mb/9700rpm) and the performance was realllll sluggish on the system. it was real slow and not multi-taskable.

so hope this helps

i would go w/ 120gb 5400 then > say 80gb 7200rpm. get more space! you wont see MUCH of a diff in speed. but you will gain 3things going w/ 5400rpm hd.

check on google for ATA6 transfer rate. i would go w/ a sata drive but again maybe the ata has more transfer speed.

I am confused here. What's the difference between the premium carbon fiber and the regular carbon fiber? I thought all the premium models came with carbon fiber and the non premium models came with no carbon fiber.

The diffrence is that the SZ281P/X has a *painted* carbon fiber lid and the SZ280P/C has an unpainted one.
