dell/ibm dilemma

Thread Starter
hi all..
is the dell inspiron 8600 a better value for money than the ibm r50p...assuming similar high end specs...1.7ghz, 512 ram, 128mb vram, wireless a/b/g...
i have not actually seen either machine (only low res pics)...so how does the overall finish/ looks compare...and dell also has the option of acrobat 6.0 being included along with office 2003....
i think i have narrowed it down to these 2- but just cannot decide...any help would be really appreciated!

High-end, I would go for the IBM r50p over the Dell i8600. The i8600 has biuld quality issues, while IBM is rock solid. I think at the high end of the spectrum, they're configured at similar prices.

I have owned them both, and can tell you there is no comparison as far as build quality, the R50P is far superior. Metal hinges, much stiffer ABS construction, great trackstick, trackpad and the BEST keyboard in any laptop anywhere. By the way, they have had a $300 price drop on the R50p and they will bargain on the phone, do NOT order online call them up. They want to move them. I am totally satisfied with my Thinkpad. One note, the 8600 will be better for gaming, the Radeon 128 is better than the Thinkpads FireGL although they are both 128 mb cards.

I thought both cards were ATI 9600s (M10). I think the only difference is that the Dell's card is clocked higher. Ibm just uses different drivers for Fire GL.
