6400/e1505 high pitch sound

hi,

i have the inspiron 6400 / e1505 laptop. I was wondering if it was normal for it to emit a high pitch sound, , which is not constant, but interrupts sometimes, near the top part of the keyboard, especailly audiable near those air vents on the sides of the keybard.

thanks

could that be the CPU?

You have the dreaded "CPU whine". After several threads I've read on this matter I am of the belief that ALL the new laptops have it and the only difference among the computers out there is whether or not the sound annoys the owner.

Mine's got it.

I notice it a lot less than when I first fired it up. It still annoys me from time to time, but I don't think there's much that can be done about it, short or replacing the cpu until you happen to get one that doesn't make the noise.

I didn't send mine in for repair, but the Dell tech said it probably wouldn't be something covered under warranty.

I don't have it.......... yet?

Mine does it, but I dont think I'll send it in for prepare, just because most of the time I have music on and it blocks the noise out.

It annoys me when I hear it though.

I had the same problem and the sound gave me headaches. I called dell customer service and I got a full refund with no additional fees.

ok i discovered that if u disconnect the AC adapter, it stops, to that sound is only made on my PC when connected to AC powser, i called DELL and they said it might be an ac adapter thats causing this, so they sending me new one, gona see if it helps.

i read some threads on DELL forum, I got the revision R00 adapter, and some poeple said that R03 fixes it, maybe im wrong and its different kind of noise but ill try

I have that high pitched noise coming from my e1505 as well, i barely noticed it when i was using my laptop in the morning...one way of reducing the noise is to connect the AC adapter ..the noise is almost complete gone when the laptop is attached.

The sound is really getting to me now. Any idea on what I should do?

Send it back.

I have the sound all the time. With the AC plugged in, it is maybe a little quieter, but still noticable. The only way my computer stops making the sound is if I am taxing the cpu, like running Super Pi.

See page 133 of your manual - there's a list of phone numbers for contacting Dell.

thats quite odd...my e1505 is working just fine. no noises or anything. the loudest is the cd drive when reading/writing. but thats not even bad.

I'm on my second e1505/6400, and actually I'm JUST setting up the new one right now. Both seem to have the highpitched sound. I'm not sure that the issue is isolated. I remember though when I first got this first system, the whine was much more annoying. I think. This new one seems to be a bit better and quieter. The screen is also much nicer but thats a different story.

I have a theory, and its that most of the recent e1505's produce this high pitched whine, but a lot of people cannot hear it because the frequency is very high. In fact, the issue reminds me a lot of this: http://gearlog.com/blogs/gearlog/arc.../12/13650.aspx
...its that new cellphone ringtone that is a really high frequency buzz that only teenagers can hear. I suspect this because my dad can't seem to hear the high pitched whine, but I can. Just a theory though. However I found that after using the notebook for 2 weeks, It stopped bothering me. However, that didn't stop me from ordering a new notebook lol, and now I'm glad I did.

During the course of the two weeks, I actually came across two solutions that got rid of the high pitched whine 90%. You have to download i8kfangui, and set the fan speed to constantly run on low. Then download rightmark, and there is an option under the management and profiles tab that says " RUn HLT command when OS is idle " I think that the issue has something to do with the core duo. It seems to emmit the buzz when the CPU is not under load, so I THINK this command forces it to not be under 0% load. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Hope this helps!
