do you need to create a separate partition for the download? and how do you burn isz?
no, download the file, extract it with winzip. The file extracted will be a .iso

Now open Nero, choose burn from disk image.
and as far as partition etc, any work needed?
You will need to have:

1: The 40ishmb Dell Restore partition
2: 1308MBof unpartitioned space following your windows partition.

What is dell media expierence? Im kind of confused as to the difference between media direct and media expierence
post #110 of 144
Media Direct is a "psuedo" OS as in you dont boot into windows to use it.
Media Experience runs in windows so it is more like a kind of windows media edition like application.
They both look the same, just how you boot into them is different.
If your OS is MCE, then you dont need media experience

Hope this helps.

Ahhh, i have MCE so i just d/l'd the media direct.

ill wait for it to finish, then install it

Yep, install media direct then you may also have to run the quick repair for media direct as well (you can download the iso for quick repair from dell's website).
Also, be sure to add the tskmngr.exe to your system32 folder on the partition DURING install (you will see a new partition appear about 1/2 way thru the install and then you can put the tskmngr.exe into the system32 folder that is created in that partition).
This will allow you to install video, graphics, chipset etc.. drivers from within media direct.

Other threads describe this in more detail.

Good luck

Looks like mooload.com had a major problem and lost all data.
Now even the domain is unreachable...

Mabye we can set up a torrent with some superseeders as an alternative?
Bummer, well then try using the uploading.com for the MD2.0 (I split the .rar into 2 parts due to size limitations) and the megaupload and bigupload for the MXE3.1.

If someone is willing to show me how to make a torrent, I will do that (I tried once but did not work.. just wasted a few days and alot of uploading bandwidth).

I have several TB of unused bandwidth per month. I will place a permanant home for these files when I finish downloading/uploading them.

And THANK YOU debaucher. You have been just an awesome help.
No problem!!
I have spent quite a bit of time testing out different things I can do with all the different dell partitions (The restore, utilities, media direct etc...) and got alot of help on this forum as well.

Oh, and I am sure everyone will be glad for these files to have a permanent home as I have to keep uploading them as the various sites go down!

D.

Oh, and if you need any of these files (as maybe a site went down etc..) we can set something up for me to upload them directly to you if you prefer!

I hate to sound like I've got a 'honey-do' list for you debaucher ... BUT

Any way we can set up a wiki page somewhere for an overview of all these 'media alternatives' for the dell laptops?
Personally, I've got an Inspiron 6000 with the media buttons, XP Professional as a primary OS, and I installed the DMD 2.0 as the 'Playbutton' OS. I've got no clue what Dell Media Experience is, and it seems like others are getting these two confused as well.

Mabye even a 'It worked for me!' page with the systems that people have gotten this to work with and what they had to do

Thanks debaucher for all the work you've put in here.

I'm wondering what's the difference between the v.0114 and v.0317 downloads for MediaDirect?

I have read on other threads that there are two versions of the MediaDirect Reinstallation CD - RJ262 (for newer chipsets) and DH371 (for older ones).

I have the Inspiron 630m which has a chipset needing the DH371 version. But all the ISO images available seems to be the RJ262 version as far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong). Dell isn't cooperating in sending the CD I need - they tell me "it wasn't part of my original order."

Could someone upload the DH371 CD ISO image please? Gigasize is a pretty good free option for uploading large files.

Cheers,
Sam

Sam, I think this one might be the correct version for your laptop.

debaucher -
Download MD2.0 reinstall v.0317 but I can't burn a image. The file ext. on the download is .isz. I tried changing it to iso and none of nero or roxio can read it. I get the "The data you are trying to burn is not supported". Please let me know what you used to make the file and how to get it burned.

Thanks
