Last site for Media Experience is down again so I will re-up to a new site(s).

edit......Grr, it is taking me forever to upload this file as either my provider has had enough and has capped my upload speed even more or the new site I am trying is extremley slow.... hopefully I will have 2 new sites to download Dell Media Experience posted for everyone by tomorrow morning

Heres my extra findings. MD 2.0 Doesn't need 1.5GB or even 2GB. I just installed it and it takes up 1,428MB (934MB in use) on its own. The HPA size is 1.51GB. That's a difference of 82MB between Reinstallation and HPA repair. When you take into consideration that some people keep the Diagnostic utilities for easy repair you can potentially save 120MB.

It just seems easier to delete the hpa, reinstall skipping the need for partition table editing etc, gaining 100mb or so in the process.

hey D,

When I put the cd in to boot it it, I got to the 3 partitions, now, I have an option to 1) Set up windows on the same parition xp was already on, or 2) install a partition in the unpartitioned space, 3) Delete the selected partition (which would be windows xp, the second partition on the list) Which one do I do? Do i do number one or 2. ALSO, what is the difference in doing a quick format to a normal format.

also, if i do select to put windows over the current windows partition, it gives me a warning saying like it is not recommended that you do it or something, should i just do it anyway? ... or I have the option of deleteing the windows partition and then just making a new one...is that what i should do. By the way, I deleted my dell recovery so i have 2 normal partitions and hidden media direct..Will either way mentioned above still let me do the repair utility to get media direct to work, or do I specifically need to put xp over the same partition even with the warning the xp window gives me about doing a "multiboot"..

if you have the reinstallation disk: delete ALL three partitions. Create a new partition using all availabe space EXCEPT leave 1500mb of unallocated space. After creating the partition, install windows on that partition. I usually do a normal format when I have time, but a quick is perfectly sufficient if you haven't had problems with the hard drive.

START FROM SCRATCH!

What Pondskipper says is the best way if you have the reinstallation disk.
If not, then delete the existing XP partition, recreate it and install xp over that. You will have to run the media direct repair once windows is up and running to remap the mbr for the XP and MD partitions.

As for quick and normal format, normal will scan the hard drive for bad sectors while quick does not.... so if you are sure you hard drive is fine then I would save the time and do a quick format.

Actually, I uploaded the Media Experience as some people need it after a new install of XP. So, look on the previous page and I do have the MediaDirect INSTALL CD (~350MB) uploaded. I just checked it and it is working so go over the previous posts (the 2nd of 3 pages for me) and you will find a post by me with the uploaded Link.... Actually, here you go (you should read the whole thread next time)

I thought you uploaded MD2.0 debaucher, DMX is a bad thing to upload. Since it plays DVD it has DVD licensing and it also requires a serial number to install, so thats definately bad not so legal uploading iirc. Just a heads up, but atleast you arent hosting it I have my sexy DMX 3.1 disk next to me.

Thanks debaucher. So kind of you to go through all the trouble to post the files :-). Does it require license as DrThodt said? But DrThodt, for those who don't have Windows MCE, they must install DMX for the MD to work as there is no Windows MCE interface to begin with. I have XP Pro on my laptop and I have to have DMX for the button to work.

BTW, as I mentioned earlier, I "long repaired" MediaDirect and it doesn't occupy any partition (hidden or unhidden) at all. My laptop now has 3 partition: 2 unhidden created by me (c: and d: drives) and 1 hidden 4GB system restore partition (that I didn't erase when reinstalling Windows). There is 1 unallocated partition of about 8mb though. But I doubt that 8mb would be the MD. There is NO 1.5GB or 40mb whatever Dell partition in my hd (I am sure about it, I view my hd using PartitionMagic). So, where is it? BTW, I have Windows XP Pro on the laptop and I have to run DMX on it (since it's not Windows MCE).

No, this does not require a license (which is why you need to copy the taskmgr.exe during install so you can install your own DVD codec, sound drivers, video drivers, divx/xvid codecs etc...)
This is the MediaDirect2.0 CD, not the DMX3.1 CD.

And for bbjuju, you need to use a partition software to free up 1.5G of space at the END of your windows partition.
So, I would basically use a partition software to shrink your XP partition by 1.5GB, leave that "free" 1.5GB of space free (not formatted or anything) let windows reboot and do its thing to shrink that XP partition.
Then, I would run the MediaDirect2.0 Install CD and watch "My Computer" for a Z or X drive to show up.
When it does, copy the taskmgr.exe from "system32" to the same on the Z or X drive.
Now when you boot into MediaDirect from the button (cold boot) you can ctrl-alt-del and File-->New Task (Run) and install your codecs/drivers you have on a USB drive or burned to a CD.

And your welcome for hosting.. I myself got this (first) off of a download link on this forum so I am just trying to do my part

Thanks debaucher for answering. But how to install my own DVD codec and such? I have my own DVD player software. But it seems DMX just wants the native Cyberlink PowerDVD player (yes, it can't play DVD until I installed that Cyberlink thing on my laptop). Any pointer would be appreciated.

I HAVE done a repair and MD button works like a charm now. But the issue is that there is NO 1.5 GB hidden partition any where on the hd. So, the issue is MD is there and it's NOT occupying any partition. Yes, I am sure the button is working and I am sure there's no partition for it. Would there be any potential problem if that's the case?

It depends, if you hit the MediaDirect button on the laptop when it is powered down what does it do.
Does it boot up into windows then start media direct or does it go straight into media direct (without loading windows first).

If it starts up windows then goes into MD, then you still need to install MD2.0, if it goes straight into MD2.0 then you do have it on a hidden partition (maybe REALLY hidden lol)

As for installing your dvd codec, just run the Cyberlink install CD from within MediaDirect (from a cold boot... ie power down laptop, hit media direct button).... assuming it goes straight into Media Direct and not Windows--then media direct.
Once in media direct, just hit Ctrl-alt-del and do the File--run to be able to search your computer.
Go to the dvd drive that has your cyberlink cd and choose the install.exe for it.

It's hidden :-) It's sometimes 100% invisible until hdd manufacturer tools allow you to see it, or higher level tool.s
