i8600 and crap 3dmark2001 result

Hello,

just installed xphome fresh and here the results:
3dmark 2001se 8200

p1.7
1024mb
80gb 5400rpm
atiradeon 9600 128Mb
on main ac adaptor

WHY SUCH A LOW 3dmark2001 score?
I've picked all the drivers from the dell site (latest stuff and latest bios).
Just wondering if people with 9000+ scores have used the drivers cd bundled with the laptop instead.

cheers

Does it bother you that much?

ehm yes
It's about 15% slower than it should be.

just wondering if better to re-reinstall windowsxp fresh, and use the drivercd provided with the lappy (it should also autoinstall everything at once).

I've instead used the drivers I've downloaded manually from dell's site
(and it looks like I'm missing something: as a matter of fact before reinstalling the OS, I was able to see the volume bar while pressing the + and - audio buttons. Now it's gone...)

cheers

Did you try installing other drivers; i.e. Omega drivers for your Radeon? Also, did you try using SpeedswitchXP and turning the CPU speed to max when on AC. I don't think these tweaks matter, *but* they may help.

Most likely, though, if you installed via Dell's restore disks, they installed a bunch of crap on your system that are running in the background. Try running msconfig or use Spybot S&D to take out startup-happy programs or Alt-Ctrl-Del and take out most of these background apps.

tried the latest omegadrivers,
now It doesn't let me run 3dmark2001se because I had to install directx9.

tried 3dmark2003 tough and getting 2800.
Do I have to turn some services off/install some patches/ doing so wizardy or what?

as I still have 3 days (out of 7) to test it and decide whether to keep it or send it back. screen is nice but a 2000pounds machine can't be so slow!

i8600
1.7 centrino
1024Mb 333
ati radeon 9600 128Mb
80gb 5400rpm 8bm cache
hp home sp1
wireless 802b/g

by the way it says penium-m and not centrino on the windows properties....

cheers guys

2800 sounds like a decent 2k3 score
It should say PentiumM since you have a PentiumM CPU Centrino is a marketing term for the PentiumM CPu ocmbined with the Intel 802.11b card and Motherboard

Hey Luca!

I get 97XX in 2001 & 27XX in 2003 (latest dell drivers & no tweaking). Your getting a decent 2003 score so it does not sound like a sub standard card, have you checked out the open GL settings in your ATI control panel?

crux,

you're getting same/best 3d marks than me, despite the the slower cpu (1.5 versus 1.7).

May I know what drivers are u using ?
Are all the latest dell's drivers?

and most important did u let windows install all (ALL!) the hotfixes? mine are over 18 hotfixes

cheers

It's still pretty much as it came out of the box (still evaluating in my 7 days before deciding to keep). So I've not yet done a re-installation. Also I have not downloaded dx9 update from ms.

My previous 8600 with same spec (only WSXGA) got 9650 & 2703 straight out of the box. When I updated to omega 3.10 I got 9598 & 2743, then with new dell drivers 9605 & 2718.

Both systems using XP home.

thanks for the fast reply!
I'm just puzzled as I don'yt know whether it's better to install the hotfixes first thing, or install the drivers first,THEN all the hotfixes.

by the way more I tweak it, more the 3dmark 2003 goes down.
Now it went down from 2827 to 2720 to 2600 to 2450!
hence I'm reinstalling windows, installing all the latest dell drivers,
all the hotfixes (which one first? drivers or hotfixes) and keep it as is

Do you also use the powerstrip/fanguy/speedxp utils?
cheers
have a nice weekend

I usually have fangui running on the system tray.

powerstrip & speedxp, I keep the set up files handy and install/uninstall if I need them.

I have always installed drivers first.

Regards.

Some times when u Over Clock to much it will have the negative effect I would believe the more u Oc or tweak it is possible that it will go down due to heat and stability
