Review: S96J Screen/Noise/Temperature Comments

Hello all,
I've been using my S96J for 5 days now, and would like to share some comments. Overall, I love my S96J, but here are some things to note if you are thinking of buying one:

Pros
- The body is really is much better looking in person than in pictures.
- The screen can be set really, really bright (but see con below)
- In terms of noise, the S96J is really quiet. When the fan does kick in during high processing, the sound is still gentle and non-intrusive.
- runs new video games really well.

Cons
- The keyboard and touchpad buttons feel cheap. They both have flex, and the that cheap keyboard sound when you type/click.
- The screen doesn't have "light leakage", as much as a poor contrast ratio. - Even at 50% brightness the blacks are somewhat grey.
- The viewing angle of the screen is poor. If you are look at the screen from the sides or especially up/down, the edges quickly become dark.
- The Fn key is placed in the bottom left corner, and pushes the Control key to the right of where it is normally. This makes cutting and pasting an experience in frustration, but I'm slowly adapting to the new key position. The backspace/delete key is also shifted over to the left.

More comments about the screen:
The greyish blacks are only noticable when the overall screen is black. During normal work, where the black sections are right next to brighter sections (like a windowed dos box), the blacks do look black. If you've never used a really good lcd screen before, you probably won't notice at all.

Other Comments:
How the S96J handles heat is a tricky issue. On the positive side, after playing Oblivion for 3 hours, the CPU did not go over 58C. On the negative side, both the left and right palm rests do get luke warm (aka: not hot at all, just warm).

Overall, very helpful and informative observations. As for the palmrest heat, is it cooler or warmer than other laptops you have used. I find that most lappys will get "warm" at the palmrest area.

I would say warmer, but then again, none of the previous laptops I have used were greater than PIII or Celerons, with integrated graphics and 4200rpm disk drives.

Good points. For me, I was more concerned over brightness than contrast.....i.e. I just need to be assured I can read the thing easily at all times.

I disagree on the viewing angle though. I find it more than acceptable for a notebook panel. From typing distance, you've got about a foot of play in any direction other than down. Heck, we used this in the livingroom to watch a movie once and there were no complaints.

Just checking....you got the AUO panel, right?

I guess this measurement is somewhat subjective, as it's not like the screen goes from perfect to black as you move past a certain distance. Just from experience, my spouse has a Sony VGN notebook (forget the exact model number), and the viewing angle is much greater. Ie. At the same distance left/right, the screen is more readable.

You are right however, for one person in front of the notebook (or for two people in front of the notebook but father away), it not a usability issue.

If you can tell me how to check the panel manufacturer, I'll let you know.

I think mine had a marking on the protective plastic strip around the bezel.

You know what's great about VBI though is that the panel is just as swappable as any other component. As soon as a compatible one comes along that you prefer, I'm sure it will be a matter of relatively minor inconvenience to swap it out. Already there are four panels.

AUO B154EW01 (15.4'' wide)
CMO N154I1 (15.4'' wide)
CLAA154WA05 (15.4" wide)
QDI QD15TL02 (15.4'' wide)
