HELP!!! Broken i9300?

Hi, I have an i9300 (bought it just this last christmas time) and am now travelling in Istanbul. My laptop is broken I think because when it turns on, the screen flashes for a second and then goes black again, but is still working, and when i type my password after waiting for a minute for windows to load, it even plays the intro music. So my comp works, only it thinks the screen is always closed (so it's like being blind and trying to use a computer). This problem started less than two months back actually, but I developed a technique where I close the lid immediately after turning the power on, then opening again and everything would work. Now that doesn't work and I cannot use my laptop. I am on another comp right now. Is there anything I can do here in Istanbul to fix it. I will be here for a little less than two months.

Specs for comp are: 2Ghz, 100GB 5400rpm, 6800 go, 2GB ram, and the lower resolution of the two choices for screens (1440 X 900), Windows XP Professional SP2.

Also, I just picked the default warranty for my comp when I bought it, so it's been over 6 months now. I don't really know how long the default warranty is.

Any ideas? Could the cause be something other than faulty lid sensor? I really need to fix this soon.

Is the wire that connects the lcd to the video card be loose?

Do you mean the wire I can see between the gaps in the hinge? They look the same as always. Can't tell if it's loose. That wouldn't be it either, since it always flashes the screen on then off when I press the power every time. Any other ideas?

no, he means pop open your laptop and see if the wire going to the LCD is connected to where it should be

i had a problem kinda like that why my screen would distort big time and for a while i could just press down on the hinge cover and *presto* it would be fine again but eventually that wouldn't work so i got a new screen and this one works fine

This wire thing might be the reason. But can someone explain to me how this wire leading into the screen works? If it is disconnected though, how come I was able to get out of the problem before?

If I take apart my computer to check this wire connection, would it void my warranty?

Opening it up won't void the warrenty, just be careful. To get the LCD cable, simply pop off the section above the keyboard by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the gap on the right hand side and then gentry prying it up and off. You'll be able to see the LCD cable pretty much straight away especially if its labeled like mine 'DAQ20 17"'. Make sure its firmly connected.

You may also want to make sure the screen isn't defualting to an extrnal display or the tv out.

i opened the thing and the coaxial cable or whatever is connected. i even pulled it out and stuck it back in and still same problem. i'm thinking it might be a problem with the sensor, always thinking the lid is closed (the sensor is in the hinge for the i9300 model, right?). how can i check this out or get this fixed here in Istanbul? does anyone know if there are Dell repair centers around or whatever?

bump... need help!!!

Well, your default warrenty is one year. Call Dell, let them know what the problem is and they should be able to get you sorted out.
You might have to send it in, but they will fix it.

Now, about them having services centers in Istanbul... don't know that one.

If I send it in, would it be that they send me a new one first, and then I can send in my old one, or what? And also what about my data on my hard drive?

It would be more like they'll fix it in 3-5 business days and send it back to you. If you are up to it, I'm sure you can convince them to send you the part and you do it yourself.

Would I still keep my hard drive and all the stuff on it untouched, or would they mess with it? I know it is not something on the hard drive causing this problem because I booted it without a hard drive and same flash and black screen.

If you cant see the Dell Logo on the Bios part of the boot sequence then it is definately not a problem on your harddrive. Give them a call and they should get things taken care of for you. Usually they can send a person to you for repair but that may not be available in Istanbul...

Good Luck.

cool. i guess i will try to get it fixed when I come back to the US in August. I really hope I get to keep all the stuff on my hard drive cuz I kept all my pics from Istanbul on it, and now I can't delete stuff from my cam's memory card so I can't take anymore pics. For all those that haven't been to Istanbul yet, it's such a cool place, definately spend a vacation here at least twice.
