(Very) slow Internet with DLing with BT

Hey guys.

Got a problem I thought and hoped you might be able to help me with. I will try to explain my situation the best I can so I can hopefully get some input on what to do.

First my setup:

I have Comcast High Speed Internet in the SF Bay Area. I have a Linksys WTR54G (I think that's the number) wireless/wireed 56G router hooked up to it.

I have:

1. Desktop PC wired directly to the Router via ethernet. This PC is set up with a static IP address.

2. Laptop with automatic IP connection via wireless G.

3. Second Desktop in another room also on auto IP connecting with wireless g.

I occationally use Bittorrent to download files. I have some ports open for BT in my routers config to make downloads come through better. But the problem is when I download ANYTHING it brings normal internet broswing literally to a standstill. I get "the operation timed out when try to blah blah" messages." It affects all the computers, including the one I am downloading on. My downloads on BT are speedy as can be, and accept any DL speed limit I set, but this had no affect in helping to restore normal web browsing bandwitdh.

At first I thought maybe the BT's are just taking too much of my bandwidth so I slow down the max download... but it did not help at all. The only thing that helps is stopping the downloads alltogether but I am of course trying to fix this problem so I can download AND surf normally.

One odd thing is I play World of Warcraft and even when I download, it doesn't affect the games connection or my latency at all. I dont know why that is.

I beleive my problem lies somewhere in my port forwarding, though I admit I don't know much about networking. It seems by having the port open for the BT program (azeureus) whenever that is "In use" it like shuts down all other access. I don't have any firewall active let me also mention.

What can I do to fix this? Would another Bittorrent app work better? I have only ever tried Azureus so I don't even know what else is out there. Do I have something set wrong?

Thank you for any help!

What do you have the upload/download limits at?

I've tried different ones. Upload is set very low, like 10-20. I tried varying download from 100, down to 10 and still the simple internet browsing is pretty much non-existant until I stop the bittorrent download all together.

I got rid of my WTR54G is because it wouldn't download well with bit torrent. I seriously tried EVERYTHING, went to forums, tried firmware and forwarding ports...nothing worked >.>

I got a different router, works just fine with port forwarding.

Hey guys I am sorry I think I need to proof read better. My brother is not download itself with bittorrent, it's that when I am downloading anything it brings my normal websurfing to a STANDSTILL. I tried the obvious like limiting my download speeds on BT but the only thing that actually works is to stop my download all together. My port forwarding as far as BT goes is working just fine. It just seems that when that port is in use... everything else is nil.

I am sorry if I did not make my problem clearer. I'm gonna go proof read my first post.

what are the connection speeds? up/down. i know i've had BT problems and having my entire network slow down, though I'm not sure why. it all fixed itself when i reduced the upload speed to like 5-10KB/s upload on a DSL line (1.5mbps/128kbps) because by calculation, my maximum upload speed is 16KB/s. yeah, try lowering the upload speeds. sometimes, if you're uploading too much, it makes it so your requests out to get webpages don't even go out.

when I switched to www.utorrent.com it made my connection (and my computer) much faster. Go for it, its a 200kb or something program, really amazing. it might work

Yep I had 100% the same exact problems you're going though. I tried everything humanly possible to figure out what was wrong. Downloaded firmware, Paid for firmware, posted on MANY MANY forums, Had one of my friends look at (technical genious, and head of a tech support for a company) and, even exchanged it for a new one. The router just didn't work for me at all. I got a new/different router, and things are fine now.
