New look to the Area-51

Hey guys... most of you already know my story lol. Well, today I was checking out the prices, hopeing to see a new promotion and then I see that the area-51 m5500 is VERY different. Not a bad different but different.

I like how the processor is core duo. That is VERY cool. Just wondering, how much of a difference will the 1.66 gHz 2mb centrino be compared to the same specs with core duo?

Ok, now with the new look. I Do like how the grips and the keyboard is black. That looks nice but wheres the ALIENWARE words on the top of hte case? That I thought was cool because I am a wicked brand name type of person and if I am going to pay good money for something, I want people to know what it is. Now, its only the alienhead. Does that still glow blue, does anybody know? Also, I dont like how the alien head is the same saucer grey color as the case. It make it less noticable. And I cared more for the darker grey than the saucer grey...

Lastly, the memory for 1GB is $150 compared to the previous price of $100. And previously, that was $100 going from 256mb... now it comes configured with 512mb dual. I am concerned about sticking with the 512mb. How easily would it be to upgrade later and how costly? Also, what will my performance be like with the 512 or should I just pay the $150 for the 1gb?

Ok, I think I'm done for now. I am hoping that since this is their new modified line, they will run a good promotion on it soon. I'm still waiting to order...

You are in the same boat I am, although i do like the saucer grey instead of charcoal just the same. At any rate, i wish they had kept the word alienware on it, but you win some you lose some, i can bare not having the alienware logo and getting dual core instead \m/ (-_-) \m/ ... At any rate, i am also waiting for a good promo. I think I will order with the 1.66 dual core because this fall merom comes out, the new dual core processor, and it will be compatible with the 945 chipset that the area-51m uses. Thus, no reason to spend an extra 200 now, when it won't be used past the time merom comes out. And as for the Ram, buy from newegg.com, i know the manuals someone said have directions on how to do it yourself. Best of luck looking for the promo, lemme know if you catch one before i do, and i will do vice versa.

I doubt that they would remove the blue lighting behind the Alienhead. I think they removed the lettering though because the m9700 doesnt have it either.

I am under the impression that the alien head will still glow blue. That has been an AW trademark for quite some time, and I doubt that it will disappear.

As for the dual core processor, you will notice an increase in performance over the single core. With dual core, you can operate more programs at the same time. i.e; antivirus while watching a dvd, or playing a graphic intensive game while ripping music, movies, etc.

thanks toolb0x, I will deffinitely let you now when I order

Thats good if it still glows blue.... but oh man I wish it said Alienware. This is mean but if I have something that plainly says what it is and someone askes, I would be like "Duh, its _____" and then if it says it its like Dont you know that?! Anyways... I guess you guys are right, the core duo makes up for it TONS!

About the upgrade in Ram... how much will that cost? And I would want to buy from Alienware so they could do it for me under waranty. WIth my luck I would do something totally wrong and void my waranty and I don't think I want to be messing with that haha.

Thanks guys, as always, you rock

Allastorm- Buy RAM yourself from somewhere like newegg.com and you can put it in yourself. It's as easy and putting the key in the ignition of your car. Alienware will walk you through what to do and will warranty the rest of your computer as long as you call and tell them that you are upgrading with 3rd party RAM. It's not that big of a deal (the RAM will have a seperate warranty) and you'll save money without sacrificing performance. Check out newegg.com and places like that. So order w/ 512 and then upgrade.

Ok, thanks BFisch06. Sounds like a plan

I've been waiting for Core Duo in an Alienware for some time now, I want to replace my Inspiron 8600, but the co.uk site still only has the Sonoma models

Any one heard a rumour on an 12,1"/13,x" with discrete VGA? (like the Dell XPS M1210)

Guys... *sigh* the eyes DONT glow blue anymore on the alienware m5500... I contacted them today to check and she told me that it doesnt anymore.

BUT, I told her that thats why everyone loves the cases because they glow and we like hte words and so on... and she said that I was being really helpful and she gave me the email to someone who handles the looks on the cases and told me to let him know that. So... Im going to do that lol.

As I posted in another thread, I asked the Senior VP and general manager of AW about the eyes in the 5550 and 5750, and he assured me they still light up. I suggested they put up pics in the galleries that show that, and send a memo of clarification to sales and CS.

Yeah, big oops IMO. The lighted alienhead is a big deal to a lot of people.

co.uk site now has dual cores but no sign of the area-51 m5750 yet which is the one i wanted though not if they charge so much more than the equivalent specification than on the .com site the pound to dollar conversion ratio is not 1:1. Does the .com site ship to the UK?

I don't think the US AW ships to europe. If you know someone in the US, you can have them ship one over, but then warranty issues will be a problem.

I assume the 5750 will be along soon on the UK site, don't know about the price...
Dont know anyone in the US unfortunatly otherwise I would do that as im not paying about £600+ more for the spec machine that is a complete rip off.

Yeah hoping that machine will follow really like the looks of it and the spec is great mobility radeon x1800! finally someone making use of it!

The other machines im looking at are the new acer ferrari 5000 or the dell xps m121391 whatever it is, any other suggestions along these lines? what would people recommend?
Well, there's always the Sager 5760, and the AW m9700. There are some resellers in Europe with the same base model as the m9700, gericom and eversham I think...

Maybe we can credit this to you, Hammerhead... the site now has pics of the m5550 with its glowing alienhead! Hopefully that will lessen the confusion! Still... it needs to says "ALIENWARE" in text above the alien head... lets just hope the reconsider it before I buy it! lol
post #20 of 25
Did they get the pics up already? Cool... I'll give the credit to you Allyson, because if you didn't bring it up I wouldn't have asked about it and pointed it out to my contacts at AW. Thanks.

I doubt the "Alienware" will make a return on the 5550, they'd have to retool the machines that make the lids to do that.

$$$$

Yep, just checked... Here's the 5550

and the 5750
