RAM Upgrade Questions: W3J

I have a W3J with 2x512MB of RAM. I was interested in upgrading the RAM, but since I'm lazy, I only want to do the easily accessible stick on the bottom.

I want to change it to be 1x512 + 1x1gig, but I was wondering about the performance hit from losing Dual-channel mode. If I go ahead with this upgrade, will I notice the loss of dual-channel, or will the computer be faster due to the addition of more RAM?

Also, what brands do you recommend for the upgrade?

Thanks to all in advance.

Is the W3J a dual-channel system?

1 Gig should be enough even for most people... but I guess some do need more (heavy gamers maybe...).

If you're a gamer and you need gaming RAM... kingston is fine. If you just need the RAM for the sake of having more RAM... any brand should be fine. But then again, 1.5g RAM is not something the everyday user needs.

Also, in terms of RAM... most brands purchase their chips from the same places save a few of the top brands who are more... selective in choosing RAM chips (I think Corsair is one of those brands?)

I hope that helps!

I ended up getting a response from the person who runs ProPortable and said that the Dual-Channel in the W3J is more of a selling point than actual performance. I do play FEAR and sometimes run a lot of programs at once, so I figure more RAM can't hurt. Also, I probably won't be so lazy and I'll just go ahead and upgrade right to 2GB with whatever is cheap from Newegg in the PC2-5300 range (probably Corsair ValueSelect).

Thanks for the answer.

I think Crucial is one that picks certain chips, seeing as how expensive it is and how they have their guaranteed compatibility when you order through their website.
