previous ASUS gaming laptop owner now inspiron 9300 owner...

Hey everyone! I just bought a Inspiron 9300 on ebay, i bought it very cheap is the only reason I could even afford to get one but after seeing the upgrade options I have to say it looked very appealing.

i've been following the Asus laptops for a bit now and the different 3d card option upgrades and the tricks people use and the mods and blah blah blah...its fun to do but judging from what i've seen so far from the Dell owners.... it seems like a LOT can be done more on the Dells... the dell so far seem to be more intelligently designed.. AND most important the upgrade options are way better on the gaming notebook Dells... you can cross border from Ati to nVidia on a Dell (am i correct on that? the x300 ati to the nVidia 6800 Go on the 9300?) thats huge in itself.

People in the Asus community are trying and looking like crazy for the slighest upgrades for their cards. MXM is a joke and Asus forthe laptop i had the Z71V and also the Z81SP (i have em both selling each for a small profit or breaking even to move on up to the 9300). People are settling for a lot less in the ASUS community..... you can upgrade the Z71V from a 64MB 6600 to a 128MB 6600 THATS IT! OR a user custom designed a heatsink fan combo for the Z71V that lets you squeeze a good deal more out of the 6600 thats the best and only way to squeeze anything out of that laptop and that sells for around $95.

With Dell the upgrade path is great... i wonder if further upgrades will be available on the 9300? Even if theyre not the 6800Go im getting with my 9300 will be upgradeable to a 7800GTX in the future thats perfect for me! I had a Z71V and just to get the 6800Go I bought a Z81SP with a desktop p4 3.2Ghz 775 Cpu . Fast as hell...but the cooling OH MY GOD hot as hell and it has a high speed 70mm under a big peice of copper in addition to the massive heatsinks on the cpu and the 6800Go. heat was pouring out of all sides theirs a grill on the top left corner above the keyboard, it looks like a big speaker grill...no its an air intake for the big 70MM fan that cools a big peice of copper that cools the massive amount of heat generated by that damn cpu.

I have a 2.2Ghz cpu on my Z71V i'd like to swap over to the 9300 before I sell it. Or I have 1.8Ghz 400mhz FSB cpu i might like to try to pin mod and see if I cant hit 2.4. does the NHC program work? Or something else maybe? Also i need to get a new 17inch screen ... its how I got the 9300 so cheap. any recommendations on that? it almost appears as if some samsung and toshiba lcds share the same connections? whats a good one? whats better matte or glossy? i've heard the regular old WXGA models are good.. like this one: LTN170WX-L05

anyways any info would be greatly apreciated, thanks!

I won't get into the Asus vs. Dell stuff, but here's the info on pin-modding: You're not going to be able to pin mod a CPU over 1.8 Ghz and have it be stable except in EXTREMELY rare cases. I wouldn't try it, but that's just me. And Notebook Hardware Control will work on any Pentium M-based notebook, so it will work with a 9300.

Im pretty sure you can get the 7800 GTX to work with a BIOS flash.

Nice well.. i have a Pentium M 1.8Ghz SL7En (i think) ... i tried it in my ASUS Z71V and used the mod ... actually listen to this... the 400mhz bus to 533mhz bus trick on the Z71V is done via a jumper right next to the cpu socket! no pin mod at all..weird huh? i guess ASUS didnt let the cpus decide for themselves what FSB they were, ASUS gives you the option of setting your 400mhz to 533 very easily! Thats probably the only advantage on ASUS's side. Also if you take a 533mhz cpu and clock it to 400mzh via the Jumper it wont do a thing.

Ok heres my question too... I tried that 1.8 I have on my ASus Z71V and the ASUS locked up... it looks like it couldnt take the voltage or something. im wondering since the 9300 is a new lappy and somewhat different... think I can now do the pin mod to my 1.8? The guy selling me the laptop also has a 1.8 but im guessing its the 533mhz kind. Anyways thanks for the responses!

Have you received the laptop already? If not I wish you luck and hope you get it, as 90% of laptops that are 'cheap' on eBay are really just scams. Especially if they asked for a money order or to email before bidding.

Although don't get me wrong, there are a few that are real auctions.

My brother actually tried buying an XPS M170 off ebay after seeing mine (he didn't consult me first and just did it) and lost $1500 in the process, so I am usually weary with ebay these days regarding laptops.

Dude ebay is getting ridiculous, their are so many scammers on ebay and theyre getting really good at stealing good peoples names, making good auctions that appear legit and scamming people later.

I made sure it wasnt a scam, I sell a lot on ebay and I know waaay more then most people about egay...more then most people that work for ebay. I have 235 all positive feedback ive done a lotof buying and selling its how I make my money. I have reported several people to ebay and I have even gotten calls from Ebay techs about my guides ive written on feedback reform. Ebays a great place if you can take advantage of it... but so many people want to abuse it. Im worried about where egay is heading....
