When I loaded Windows, it seemed that the process took longer than necessary. (This was 'confirmed' today when I built another machine, using the same Windows CD - I was surprised by how quixkly the OS seemed to load.
Fast forward to today - I started installing Visual Studio 2005. The first CD seemed to go OK. However, when it asked for the second CD, it failed to recognize any CD I offered it. When I quite the install, I noticed a red exclamation point icon on the CD icon. No CDs put into the machine are being recognized. I exited from WIndows Explorer, reopened it, and the CDRW drive is not to be seen. It is also not showing up in the device manager. After a rebot (the BIOS saw the drive), it is again listed, but the label next to the icon reads DVD-RAM Drive (which seems odd).
(As a weird side note - when I did the install, I ignored the computer for a while. As such, I never saw the screen that asks for User names - it went straight to the login screen and the only account showing was Administrator. I only mention this in case this could be a related symptom to the CD issue.)
Question - does (should) the machine be RMA'ed?
