You may want to do some reading on the various GPU's (the "video card) used in notebooks these days.
That GPU ranks towards the bottom of the chart.

"Another common integrated GPU is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, avaliable in two versions - one with shared memory (does not have any of its own memory), and one with dedicated, which has its own memory, meaning it doesn't have to borrow memory from your main RAM. The X200M is the best integrated graphics card in terms of performance today, much faster than the Intel GMA900/950. It is mainly found in AMD-based notebooks, although it is starting to make its way into the Intel-based notebooks. For comparison purposes, the dedicated X200M is about 2/3 as fast as a standard Mobility Radeon X300, which it is based on. The X200M is actually capable of some light 3D, but remember that it is integrated, and you will be very limited when it comes to games - do not buy it for that purpose."

PS: within this post is a link to a site which tells if your system will run XYZ game.

Mobile Graphics Card Comparison Chart

If you're looking for a gaming laptop, Or doing graphic intensive work the GPU should be your top priority. GPU is the "video card" for those of you who don't know.

Battery

Hi all, I just bought one of these for my wife as she goes out of town for a few months. Party at my house!! She took it to work to play with it and she stated the box(Sorry don't know what it is called) on the plug-in to power the laptop or charge the battery was very hot. How hot should this thing be? Also, is the platform with the dual fans necessary when you have a laptop to keep it cool? Thanks in advance.

Hi all. New here.

This does look like a decent laptop for the money. I'm helping a (female) friend out who is searching for a new laptop, and she wants it to be able to run the upcoming Vista Aero Glass theme. She won't be gaming with it.

Just curious if anybody here had an idea about whether this machine will run the Aero theme. I can't seem to find anything which talks about whether or not the Radeon XPRESS 200M IGP will support it.

Thanks for any help!

Will it run Vista Aero Glass theme? Have you read thru this ?: http://www.notebookforums.com/post2254062-6.html PS: Aero is going to be a resource hog... I think something along the lines of a 512mb? GPU being prefered! Lower end cards of course being "able" to run it... but with all the 3D eye candy turned off /down. Since Aero is going to need a "good" 3D GPU I wouldn't buy a machine with the Radeon XPRESS 200M IGP.... if I was planning on running Vista/Aero. Go to Microsoft, GOOGLE for the specs needed to run Vista /Aero... example: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...m+requirements

I didn't come here without having done an ounce of work. I spent about an hour looking about for GPU lists that claim to say what will and will not run aero. Of the 3 things I found earlier, they all had the 200M on it. Granted, it will not be as zippy or crisp as nicer cards, but it should be able to handle it according to the places I found. I imagine if it is possible to turn off the blurred transparency, and maybe a few other small things, it should be fine. If not, I'll just have to tell her "tough" -- because this machine is quite nice for the money.

I got a similar unit at SamsClub - $849,
Only difference, is it has an ML-34, not ML-37,
but the 3yr extended warranty was $79, and to
top it off, 6 month return policy, no restocking fee,
or any fee, for that matter.

Nice unit.

Do they REALLY expect us to give up 12G of the 75 USABLE GB of
the drive for recovery?

I used Acronis True Image to bounce an image of the drive onto a USB 2.0
250GB drive I have, and I currently have XP x32 installing, and I'll be installing
XP x64 on it tomorrow, in dual-boot.

The other unit I had in mind, was the Acer TravelMate 4404WLMi, which has
a better GPU, so let's see how I like this one The Acer is $929 at kmart.com,
but I can't recall their return policy, but I seem to remember their extended warranties were also laughably cheap! We got a Sony PS2 there a couple years ago, nd the 3yr warrantly was like $29 or somethign like that - it was ridiculous!

1: Was that a "Thank You"? 2: You should have stated that you had spend an hour looking about for GPU lists 3: Will it run it? Yes it will run it.. Will it run it well? Doubt it unless you turn all the eye candy off. I wouldn't buy a machine with the Radeon XPRESS 200M IGP.... if I was planning on running Vista/Aero.

If you have the full version of Arconis it has an option to make a restore partition on the drive that should be allot smaller than the HP one.

I certainly do appreciate the obvious hard work you've put into your posts and threads regarding GPU performance/rating.

You are right; I'll see if I can get her to wait at least another few months to hopefully see some better prices on some better machines.

Thanks.

Thanks for saying thanks... I do try to help.

On waiting, Vista/Aero is going to be a resource hog, so the longer you wait the better.

Keep in mind that even if you get the hardware to run it, Vista is going to be "buggy" for probally about two years... with software mfg's pointing their fingers at the hardware people and vs versus.... with YOU (her) in the middle.

Stick with XP Pro, then get the Aero wallpapers... unless you have alot of time on you're hands.
