what r ur settings at the moment? looking ur laptop specs, i'd leave it to XP to handle it unless u r hard up on disk space.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html - take a look at optimize page file paragraph

cheers ...

there are many arguments (healthy discussions) about manually setting pagefile (with many ideas in what values etc ..) and letting windows manages it.
i personally went thru all of these and lately come to realise that when u have equal/more than 768mb ram (and no short on disk space), just leave it to windows to manage the setting by itself. one can always argue about the possibility of pagefile defragmentation but is is a whoosh argument, once windows set up its own pagefile area, it is pretty much there all the time
setting the pagefile manually does NOT stop windows from scrapping for work area (virtual or not) when it needs to. so no gain in this area, but might cause a bit of performance degradation

do note that by default windows (XP) always uses ram access FIRST before going to pagefile, it is a myth (imo) that by "user" setting a smaller amount of pagefile would FORCE windows to use the ram more - no way. Why do u think that " windows run better when MORE ram is being installed"? also "user" setting pagefile size, in the smaller range, might create some perverse effects when running apps like adobe, burning apps, media player etc ...

cheers ...

Actually, I would suggest you lower the size of your pagefile to 512mb since you have 2gb worth of ram. You don't need 1.5 times the ram in pagefile space which I believe is what Windows uses to figure out how big of a pgefile to allocate when its set to manage the pagefile.
I also have 2gb worth of ram installed and I didn't see any degradation in efficiency after lowering my page file size to 512mb.
Cheers.

Yes, a min/max of 512 should be okay with 2 gigs of RAM. However, I also have 2 gigs of RAM and I set mine to 1024, "just in case." Never have had a problem with this setting.

You won't see any degradation in performance from a lower pagefile setting.

What you will notice is your computer refusing to do something at all when it fills up. This is bad -- Firefox refusing to open a new tab, for instance.

If Windows is set to automatically manage it, it'll enlarge it if you run out.

if you have alot of ram ie 2G you should lower the paging file limit and let it use your ram instead of hd
