Sager 8550 CPU cooling fan

Thread Starter
My fan has gone dead on my 8550 i went to radio shack and bought the closest sized fan but it only has two connectors where the original has 3 (black, white, red) i assumed that the red was the hot lead and the black was ground. When i turn the computer on the fan runs for a few seconds then stops and there is a constant beep from my right speaker .... the fan does not ever kick back on (of course i shut my cpu down after about 4 min of waiting on the fan) what do i need to do the get it to run even if it is constantly on? what do i need to do with that white wire? Also near the connector for that fan there is another two pin connector... is that for a fan also or something else. does any one have the motherboard specs on the 8550?
Thanks
Jon

the white wire (if im not mistaken) is usually a sensor wire. i'm guessing the fan turns off and you hear a beep because the motherboard doesnt detect the fan running and is trying to tell you that it is bad. i'd look online for a replacement fan with a 3rd wire for sensor (i think it is a rpm sensor).

maybe someone else will know for sure. this is only from experience with desktops and similar problems.

2 wire replacement for a 3 wire appliance - close enough? Guess not. Eger has good advice. If you replace the fan with a "non compliat" replacement you are probably asking for one or more problems IMHO.
