dv8000t Taken Apart

I have been wondering if I would be able to upgrade the CPU in my hp dv8000t laptop and decided to go all out to see if it is possible. Well after having to disassemble the entire Laptop I found that it is possible, I am guessing a new bios will be in order, but time will tell... below is a link of my disassembling adventure with images in the thread...

Quick Question.... while taking apart the dv8000t are there any "anti tamper stickers / labels" to worry about? As you know in some cases a anti-tamper label will be affixed over a screw, or screws that have to come out to get the item apart.

You sound like me... got to take everything apart to see how it works M & M Computer repair... Hmmmm... Have you taken apart a Dell 1705? How would you compare the build quality? How would you rate the two (assuming you've been into a 1705 /9400) One question I was wondering about is how HP/DELL internally brace the units.... if one is more rugged than the other.... Plus any other impressions you may have. I would assume that you thought the HP a better unit, hence why you bought one?

Hi,

I've been shopping around for a good priced school laptop that I can use to game (WoW, CS: Source, Doom 3, F.E.A.R, that kind of stuff). This so far looks like the obvious choice as it has the performance of a $2000-$3000 laptop for $1600-ish. I just had some questions before I commit that kind of cash. My first question is how many slots of ram are there, just 2? I would like to upgrade my own ram (for quality and price) and was wondering how to go about doing that (is it hard to install?) My next question is about the hard drives. I would like 2 hard drives but the price/choice from HP seems limited. Does every dv8000t have two hard drive slots and is it easy to install a second if I just order one?

I've heard pretty much only good things about this laptop and look forward to joining you guys with one...do you know if there are any deals/coupons out now for better deals? Also, I see this laptop on eBay a lot with maxed out features for less than $1500. It seems too good to be true, does anybody know if these sellers are legit?

Also, I’m looking at screens. Are the glossy ones obnoxious? Do they reflect a lot and make it hard to see in the day? Or are they better than the other style…?

Finally, about the processor: my first question is is the AMD 64 any good or should I stick with Intel’s core duo, remember this is for note-taking and gaming. Also I heard that Intel is going to be releasing a new core duo in the further that is 64 bit. I also hear that you will be able to replace the stock CPU with that when it comes out and was wondering if there is any truth there. I appreciate the patience and help guys!

Which Firewire Chip?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger for this very computer. The remaining question in my mind is about the Firewire controller chip. I will be using the computer primarily to record and playback audio in a digital home studio. In that studio I use a Presonus Firebox, a firewire audio interface. It really prefers the TI firewire controller chip, and can have problems with others.

In digging around in the HP, can you tell me what firewire controller chip it uses?

Thanks for the dissassembly job. It looks like an excellent machine.

Also, while I'm here, I want to configure mine with the 100GB 7200 RPM drive, but I'd love to add another of the same. Can the dv8000t accommodate another 7200 rpm drive, physically and in terms of controller capacity? Audio files do much better on a faster spinning HD, and better still with audio on a drive separate from the operating system. So the HP will be EVEN MORE ideal if it can handle a second 7200 RPM drive.

One thing I cant quite Determine.. Is the GPU replaceable, lets say with a 7800/gt/gtx
Nevermind.. Having actually READ your page now, I see that it is not

OR

Is the 7600 able to be flashed to something better or have more pipes unlocked? (Im kinda new to whats happening with high end video cards, Im still stuck in the Elder realms of AGP)

The problem is the 7600 isn't a physical card in the system so the pipes and the card and built onto the motherboard. Your 7600 will stay a 7600... But a CPU upgrade is very possible. HP doesn't recommend it but it is possible.

Heard anything on a BIOS update? I read that DELL has already issued a BIOS update for the 1705 /1710 so they can run the new Intel Core Duo 2's.... that the "old"/orginal bios would cause the CPU to run at half speed, and the new bios update allows the CPU to run at full speed.

M & M Computer repair... Hmmmm... Have you taken apart a Dell 1705? How would you compare the build quality? How would you rate the two (assuming you've been into a 1705 /9400) One question I was wondering about is how HP/DELL internally brace the units.... if one is more rugged than the other.... Plus any other impressions you may have.

I would assume that you thought the HP a better unit, hence why you bought one?

I took apart the system to make sure the actual chip would work. I have taken apart many Laptops and have found that some laptops just do not upgrade well in the CPU dept.

As for build quality would say both HP and Dell are on par, I have taken apart many dell notebooks and now HP notebooks and find there build styles different but on par with each other. I personally like the way Dells laptops are built especially in the XPS line as they are much easier to upgrade. But I do love my DV8000t.

On that CPU upgrade.... A couple of people here lately have been asking about it. Is the Core Duo 2 cpu confirmed to work in the dvxxxx series? Cpu fully supported in the bios, running at full speed?

478 vs 479?



this is my processor

but it is 479 mPGA , but the replaceable T7xxx core 2 duos are 478mPGA,

how am i going to do the upgrade

am i missing something???

Don't know where your reading about a 478 mPGA.. as the 478 CPU is a P4
