XPS GEN 2 -- right fan is really dull

I have recently noticed that the fan on the right side of my laptop isnt putting out as much power as my left fan when both are supposed to be maxed out. Also sometimes I hear a little bit of chatter going on near the fan area when it starts up...... is this fan not supposed to be as powerful as the right one? or do I need a repair?

My best guess would be this fan is almost dead, or not getting enough voltage.

Also, would it be possible, because my 1 year warranty has not expired, for dell to come to my house to fix my laptop? Do they do on site repair for laptops? I cant afford to not have my laptop for 2+ weeks if I had to send it away.

depends, did you order the onsite warranty or mail in, because if you have the mail in, you would have to just send it in if you want a repair

Both fans are supposed to run at the same speed I believe. It sounds as though it needs replacement. There is on-site repair for your laptop but only if you have purchased the On-site/Next Business Day warranty. You'll have to send it away otherwise.

My right fan is quiter than my left fan. If I check fangui both are spinning at the same rpm. They are different fans I believe, so I just assume the gpu fan is quiter.

yup, same here

HAve you ever blown out the fans with compressed air?

On my XPS Gen-2 the GPU fan ( right side ) is a smaller fan.

It may be put out the same rpm's but it will put out less air and be quieter too.

The fans are independant of each other. If the CPU is running max but no load on the GPU, then the right fan won't even turn on.

If you want to fix it yourself you could tear it open and drop some machine oil in the top of the fan bearing.

the GPU fan is smaller, so it won't be as loud/push out as much air. But if you have a rattling there could possibly be something wrong.

My GPU fan has never spun as fast as the CPU fan at max RPM. Usually around 3700 for the GPU and 4200-4300 for the CPU.

Clean it out, I just had mine replaced, I know what you mean, you can hear every rotation your fan makes right?

Same thing here, just got my new fan today. Hopefully this one won't make the scratching buzzing sound this one does now.

Funny, my right fan makes a noise too. I should check the rpm on it because my GPU might be running hot lately. Or maybe it's because it's 87 F in here right now...either way, the fan is making a noise. I cleaned it out yesterday with compressed air, that might help the temperature. I took my laptop apart when I first noticed the noise (back in February) and really cleaned that fan out, but it didn't help.

And, while they're at it, I'll have them replace the 7800 GTX Go card that's so noisy... Anyone else have that problem? It buzzes loud enough to hear over the laptop fans whenever I'm in a game...and the frequency of the buzz is tied to the framerate I see on my screen. As the framerate dips, the buzzing decreases frequency. Although...on the flip side, I don't have any problems besides the buzzing noise...maybe it's best not to mess with it. What do you think?

YES IT DOES!

The right fan, which is your GPU fan, spins slower than the cpu fan on the left.

Left fan spins at around 4.8k rpm while the right spins at around 3.8k.

Hope this helps.

I just downloaded i9fanGUI and it's reporting that both of my fans are running at (very roughly) 2500-2600 in Slow state, so that noise apparently doesn't effect how well the fan is spinning. There's no need to replace it. The GPU seems to be running much cooler now, it was probably just the dust I cleaned out yesterday.

In High state, I get about 4170RPM on Fan 1 and 3850RPM on Fan 2. I gotta go give rep to the author of this program, it's really handy.

Keep in mind that the GPU fan is SMALLER than the CPU fan. The GPU fans in these systems are only 70mm and 4.2CFM

My GPU fan is slightly slower as well. My CPU fan runs at ~4000rpm on high and ~3800 for the GPU. The GPU fan is noticeably quieter at high speed and I have it set on high as a matter of course.

Yeah, but mine is extreamly slow and chatters sometimes which drives me nuts.

And, how can the right fan be for the GPU? the graphics card is right next to the left fan....so that doesn't really make sense. I always thought my right fan is for my CPU, cause its on the same side, not the gpu.
