Intel Core Duo or AMD Turion 64 (Alienware m9700/XPS 1710)

Thread Starter
I read the thread with the kid asking about the XPS 1710 or the m9700 and I know further questions about the subject can get deleted but please don't delete this, I really need an honest opinion and I'm in a different situation.

Like a lot of the others asking for opinions on this forum, I have just recently graduated from high school and am looking for a laptop. However, I am majoring in art with a concentration in Graphic Design, which plays a huge role in my decision. I would be working with programs such as Photoshop, and probably doing a lot of multi-tasking, between different programs; on the other hand, I am a hardcore gamer and I want to have the best possible notebook for current and future gaming as well. The art department of the school I am attending uses MAC desktops and they recommend getting a Mac Book (although you may get a pc), but I would much rather have a PC as the MAC aren't known to be gaming machines. I narrowed it down between the Alienware m9700 and the Dell XPS 1710 both maxed out. I've researched and researched and researched and I’ve read that the XPS' Intel Duo processor is great for multitasking and is still performs extremely well in gaming. But the Alienware m9700 dual graphics card 7900 GS is very appealing and overall superior in gaming. Regardless of price (they both come out to be relatively the same) which would you choose if you were in my position? Is it that big of a sacrifice for the AMD instead of the Intel (in regards to graphic design)?

If you are that concerned about dual-core my advice would be to wait still the new AMD X2 mobile processors come out. I have to admit I was in the same position around last month since I am also going to college and would be running multiple business apps at the same time. I think you'll find dual core faster and the single core ML-44 "good enough."

I think you be fine with either machines, both are able to run the latest games, AW albeit with a bit more power. Or you can go for the m7700 with the X2 or FX dual cores which will smoke the intel core duo's by a large margin and still be able to game with a 7900 GTX. Same size and weight of the m9700 or m1710, It just runs hotter and batt. life sucks along with the whole power down thing if you do run it on battery
