8887 Hyperthreading full write up and bios HERE - Page 3

OK, this is kind of strange. I tried Beeb's method of repair install and everything went normal except it never asked me for drivers. I'm still checking it all out. It shows 2 processors as it should and I haven't found any problems yet. Its just running like it has the correct drivers installed. I'll give it some time and see if anything odd shows up.

Oh yeah, I forgot, it still shows that SP1 is installed! I am currently at work and can't get a connection for my machine here. I will have to wait until I get home to check windows update and see if that's true or not.

I havent had any problems with my keyboard or touchpad, but It doesnt seem to like a PS2 Mouse anymore, Its detected durring boot but doesnt work.. Also the Touchpad doesnt work with a PS2 Mouse plugged in.

Most of the time I use a USB mouse so I didnt notice it until I went to plug in my old logitech trackball when I didnt have room for a mouse. (small work area).

If you guys have any issues with the touchpad, audio, or modem after installing the HT bios, download the new drivers off www.sagernotebook.com they released them for use with the HT bios if anyone is having issues. Let us knw if the new drivers cause any issues.

Assuming that you don't need to reinstall XP again after getting the lil mini bios updates, I'm going to get the one for keyboard cooling, cuz it is getting warmer than without HT now. ACtually now that I look at it I'm not sure if doing that will undo the HT bios update, lol, so I'll just wait for the final release and install that. If it comes today or tomorrow I think I'm going to do a full format and reinstall. I didn't have time to before because it wasn't the weekend. I will also try those drivers if anything comes up, but nothing has thus far.

Also, if you do a repair install with a cd that has SP1 already slipstreamed into it, then you'll get SP1 already installed. Otherwise, I dunno... I'd still try installing it again and I would DEFINITELY reinstall the drivers after a repair install. No question about it... problems may not show up yet, but they're there, lol.

I should have looked at my cd a little closer. It has SP1 with it. The numbers I got with SANDRA looked pretty darn good after the install.

9389 MIPS 2648/5930 FPU/ISSE2

I'm going to run it a little while longer and see what shows up. So far all is great.

I uninstalled my Touchpad drivers because of the inconsistancy. Haven't noticed it freezing up, but I did lose the virtual scroll and all that.

I'll give the new drivers (from the Sager Update Page) a shot and see how things go.

Will this work for the 8886?

If I purchase a 3.06 chip, can I run these instructions on the 8886?
This was one of the big reasons I invested in a Sager BTW

This particular bios is for the 8887, I haven't been informed if there will be a bios written specifically for the 8886 to enable HT.

No offense, but the drivers that are placed on Sager's web site are usually old and dated (including the supposed 2/17 updates). This touchpad driver will not solve your lockup problems and it is considerably older than the latest driver on the 8887 Driver CD.

Well, the touchpad driver on the 8887 Driver CD is not working, so I suppose I'll use the windows default until they get a real update to their driver and/or bios.

Here's what I ended up with. I wasn't going to re-install drivers at all since everything was fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it......right? Well, I thought about it and after reading the other posts I decided that maybe I should re-install. Now the touch pad and mouse both don't work. I was using a PS2 optical mouse and the machine was very happy with it. I have now had to switch over to a usb mouse to get anything to work. I have tried both the new driver and the one on the cd. The touch pad settings don't even show up right anymore. I should have left well enough alone and not tried to re-install the drivers. At least that was the one I started with and I'm not going to try to re-install any more of them as long as the machine works. I don't like touch pads any way, but I do wish it was functional.

Has anyone tried this method of updating to a HT/dual proc system? This explanation mentions Win2K, but I've seen the same instructions applied to XP -- this particular page just explains it more clearly than most. It seems like it might keep the system in a more consistent state than the inevitable mixed-up versions that result from running a repair/reinstall.

One other thing people mentioned about this method of changing HALs is to be sure to keep the same "family" of HAL. E.g., if you start with "ACPI PC", change only to "ACPI Uniproc" or "ACPI Multiproc", don't switch to "MPS" anything or "standard" anything, etc.

(Don't do it without a backup and fresh, tested recovery floppies!)

Well, I finally got the touch pad woking again. After multiple un-installs and re-installs it started working right again. The properties still don't look like they did when I got it, but it works. So far everything else is still working just fine.

Just did it for windows2000. w/o reinstallation/repair. You can swtich to ACPI Multiprocessor PC. Did not test everything yet.
I did it on Windows XP Pro. No prob with the BIOS update. Couldn't get an ACPI Multi Proc choice in Device Manager - Computer - ACPI - Properties etc. Also all my components had the Big Yellow Question Mark while I was in there, so I rebooted and entered BIOS to set the Boot Device to CDROM first. I booted off the XP CD and did the Setup, then Repair Existing Installation option (NOT the Repair via Recovery Console). It took about 30+ minutes and I had dual CPU's in Task Manager. Touchpad and Video seemed a little quirky so I installed the new drivers (17 Feb) for Video, Audio, and Touchpad, in that order. Everything seems fine, including Touchpad scrolling. Haven't tested every single application yet (hadn't tested them before). Still get the jagged wavyness on attached CRT when in the dual monitor mode, but that's another story. All in all, great job PC Torque!
