Just got my e1705

Received my e1705 the other day.

My main issue is that the thing is SLOW.

1.66 Core Duo
512MB 533 MHz RAM
60GB 5400rpm SATA

It swaps *constantly* and when it does, it is nearly frozen.
Is this indicative of Windows sucking ass, or my laptop being broken?

I have removed all the bloatware from the machine except the McAfee stuff.

you need more ram.

Do a REFORMAT.

What do you mean swaps constantly?

You were also running 2GB in the 9300 in your signature, which is 4x the RAM you have in your 1705

What are you running that is so "slow"?

5400 rpm drive + 512 mb ram + dell bloat = guaranteed to be slow.

Haha, agreed

I figured it wouldn't be as snappy as my i9300 was, but I didn't think it would be 10 seconds for the system to unfreeze while AIM tries to login. So locked up the MOUSE doesn't move. I haven't seen shit like this since original pentium days.

I have to wait a couple months to upgrade the ram and hard drive. I guess I will try a reformat tonight, and if that doesn't fix it.. I may return the thing.

You need to do a re-format, and watch what you install on your computer

Let us know how much better things are after the reformat

I just got my e1705 today (about 3.5 hours ago). Right now, it is reinstalling. I have the same config as you. I ordered 2gigs of RAM from another site, but the shipping has been delayed so I am stuck with 512 for now.

Ultra quick observations:
- It was slow as hell. However, I believe I can attribute that to the gargantuan amount of Dell crap that came installed with it. My current desktop runs with 28 processes (when idle). The e1705 started out with 44 processes! So, I believe this reformat will greatly help.

- I don't know if I should be concerned, but if I open the lid and leave it like that for ~30 minutes, it creaks when I go to close it. I feel that it is just "working the bugs out of the system", but we will see (I did get a 4 year+completecare warranty).

Anyway, back on topic, disable McAfee's craptastic software and all the other junk that starts up when you log into the computer. That will help a lot.

Regards,

zakaluka2.

new computer doesn't always = fast

look at the specs...did you expect it to be blazin with that king of hardware? it is a mid of the road notebook with middle of the road hardware....if not low end hardware

Just get more ram buddy, it will fix that issue.

1GB of RAM is a world difference from 512MB, 2GB is another world difference from 1GB.

512 ram just isn't enough esp with all the junk Dell puts on. When I first got my 9300 I would get stuttering in itunes only surfing the internet. Upgraded to 1.25 gigs and 0 stuttering, everything is much faster.

I have exactly the same spec, except with another 512MB of Ram and after a format it runs sweet as sugar. So formatting should give you an imeddiate boost, but definitley go for some more ram when you can afford it. (You could also try upping your virtual memory if you haven't already)

Removing McAfee and turning off a few services did quite a bit; even after installing AVG and Zone Alarm, it's still much faster feeling than with the McAfee crap.

It's still nowhere near as fast as my i9300 was, but I'll chalk the rest up to RAM and Hard Drive, and keep saving pennies.

Thanks folks!

Go with 1GB 667Mhz RAM...

My E1705 came with 1GB 667MHZ RAM and it was fine...I upgraded to 2GB 667 MHZ Crucial RAM and the improvement was 'marginal'...

i agree with the rest man, more ram

Don't let these guys talk you into spending any more money than you need. I have two older comps, one a PIII w/256 RAM and the other a P-M 1.5 w/512 RAM, and they both run Win XP fine without any slowdown. Just reformat the HD and your problems *should* go away.

As I said, once I got rid of the McAfee crap, it got much better. It's still not at the level of my i9300 by a long shot, but it is at least tolerable now.

About 1/4 of the way to 2GB of 667 MHz ram

Reformatting should yield a drastic improvement. Have you reformatted yet?

Ha, easier said than done. That one remaining McAfee service is harder to get rid of than any virus I have ever encountered.

Must not be a gamer. Any modern game (even Unreal Tournament 2004, two years old) will put you over 512. And the paging makes the game run much slower. I found myself dying at the beginning of games because people were already playing and killing my frozen arse! I doubled the RAM, and voila! Problem solved. Unless you are only Web browsing or using Word on your laptop, 1GB is a minimum configuration, and with RAM-hog Vista coming, I'd go 2GB. I'd hate to see how slow video encoding would be on a 512 machine!

Did I mention how much I hate McAfee!!

That is the one of the biggest resource hogs out there! BTW, are you happy with the performance now?
