So um, i've had something liket his in mind for a long time but i finally did it and here are some screenshots. just a proof of concept kinda thing.

The host os is Ubuntu Dapper Drake X86_64, WinXP is installed through Qemu and OS X through PearPC.

in the works is running multi-layer emulation where i got linux emulating windows emulating osx. or maybe linux emulating bsd emulating windows emulating osx... i dont know....i am going nuts!

performance wise, I am proud to say PearPC has come a long way, its actually faster than Qemu (yes i have Kemu installed)...which is kinda sad for qemu.


conflicts i am yet to resolve:
qemu is slow... but at least it seems to work ok, networking works, and so does mounting of cds and such, so next up i guess i can use it to sync my pda (axim x50v) because synce is well...still not ready for prime-time.

under pearpc networking doesn't work, it only mounts cds, (fails to mount my usb flash drive), and so i really have no way of putting files on the img file unless i burn it to cd and then boot it...haha... so i guess i better get started on making a CD collecting of useful OSX tools and programs.

thats really cool. just thought id jump in here to say that. You are making me want to give another go at linux, but in the industry i am getting into it'll be really tough at first.

thats why god invented dual booting, or at the very least VMPlayer


for me.... i am just having fun. and its really cool how software can think that my AMD64 is a P2 and a G4 at the same time

Yeah I was going to ask you about the CPU thing.

I am really thinking about partitioning off some space for ubuntu. The problem is that I have a 60gig HDD and 51gb available. It really sucks because I won't have much space.

BTW how much does an Ubuntu install take up? That would really help me decide because I have about 15gb free. If I could just finish Oblivion so I could delete it.

i have a 60, but i dont dual boot. back when i did dual boot i had 20gb to linux. ubuntu people recommend a minimum of 3gb for the base install. a fully configured nice system shouldn't be more than 5gb, everything else is just files, figure 10gb, so 15 or 20 gb should be enough for a starting point.


currently on my fully configured system i am using less than 20gb.... and most of it is just bloat since my mac os virtual image is 5gb and my windows virtual image is 8gb....

How fast is pearpc compared to vmware?

I'm in the process of migrating everyone in the main office of my company to linux. Unfortunately we're stuck using Quickbooks until I can implement a better solution (preferably a mysql based invoicing/accounting system). So I'm running win2k with vmware server on the qbserver and vmware viewer with win2k on the workstations.

I'm just worried some of the slower machines (Sempron 2200) will struggle a bit. I'll try of few of the other vitualization packages if they are quicker.

BT you cant compare VMWare and PearPC, different functions.

VMWare doesnt emaulte a processor. PearPC emulates the PPC processor, so you cant run Windows on it. You could I suppose compare Pear/Linux on PPC vs VMWare/Linux on x86, but to be honest if VMWare DOESNT win that one something is very wrong as it isnt emulating a different processor instruction set.

bt....wouldn't know how fast vmware is, i am using qemu with the kqemu accelarator module. ....my cpu is an AMD64 3200+ (2.0ghz, 512kb L2) and i noticed that if i set it to max speed before i start it goes a little better.... it gets recognized as a "2ghz P2" which is pretty interesting, PearPC seems to be a constant 1.06Ghz G4.

with 512mb dedicated to qemu (i have 1gb total ram + 3gb swap space) it feels something along hte lines of what my old 233mhz Pentium MMX with 64mb ram felt like running XP....perhaps even a bit slower.... so i wouldn't wanna be stuck working on it.

have you tried running the program through wine 0.9 ?

i have been running winxp on vmware in ubuntu, and it's fairly fast. i've used photoshop in it before, and while it does take some time to load and whatnot, I think it's because I only allocated 256mb of ram to it. add some more and it should run fairly quick.
