Presario 700 USB Not Working Correctly.

All of a sudden if I plug any USB device in to either of the 2 ports the light on the device comes on but it does not work. Tried Scanner, Printer, USB Memory stick, Card Reader. The Memory stick does not show up as a drive, there is no icons for it when I open My Computer. Things show up in Device manager as unknown devices. I've even tried uninstalling the USB Controllers and reinstalled them from the Win XP Home CD but with same results.
If anyone has any ideas they would be appreciated. I checked on HP's website support service but there is nothing for USB.

Thanks.

How old is the XP install?

TIP: I had something occur along the same lines with a data cable for programing cell phones... I had two cables (power and non-powered) that when switching between them the OS would ask for drivers.... Well one time I must have "clicked" the wrong button and after that neither would work...

Un-installed the programs, re-installed, tried re-installing the drivers, etc to no avail... Searched the net, found nothing...

I ended up fixing it by going thru the registry and deleting everything pertaining to "USB".....

That would be the first thing you should do... after that maybe do a fresh install of the OS.

If I do a fresh install of the os the registry will be cleared automatically. But I'd rather not have to do it.

If you have the original Compaq install, you can use the recovery and quick-restore disks for a repair, not a complete fresh install, of the system without clearing the registry.
