Just did copper mod - temps aren't lower

i just replaced the "awesome" foam heat pads on my mr9800 with copper ones. applied arctic silver 5 to everything. mod went easier than i thought.

i did notice that the temps seemed to stay lower longer when the laptop was first turned on but now they are back to about the same as before the mod. anyone know what could be causing this? not enough copper on the core? not tightening the screws down hard enough?

i can tell you this: i was overly concerned about overtightening the screws down around the core so i went up until i felt a little resistance and then backed off half a turn. so i might have not put enough pressure on the core and therefore a poor connection is being made. i think i will tighten the screws up a little and see what that does.

you know you can overclock m18 to 459/435 .

lol @ superfly... he does'nt know us too well monk... lol and damn... superfly got the card with the "good" memory

I would try to tighten a bit more and maybe use your palm to press down smartly on the heatsink and twist back and forth a small bit to compress the AS5 a bit.

Did you use one big chunk of copper or did you use a series of little plates? if you stacked pieces, I remember others having to put AS5 between the pieces too. YUK!!!! messy....

Oh Monk... Get the 2gb ram upgrade.... I am now a believer..

i used 2 plates of copper for the core and single pieces for the vram. i think i'll try tightening down the screws some more tomorrow. my main concern is that i will put too much pressure on the core. but if that happens i can just loosen the screws up a bit.

thanks for your help whack.

i would get another gig of ram, but my money is going into another PC build. i decided to build my own gaming PC from scratch. this will be the first PC that i ever built, selected the parts for, and made my own. now im just waiting for all the parts to come in. cant wait...!

Be careful putting too muc pressure on the GPU. My friend did it and the computer wouldn't turn on. He had to lessen the force to get it working again. That was a scary couple of hours.

I'm under the impression that you can do the as5 mod on the gpu with a single copper shim of about .048 inches thickness without bothering with the VRAM or anything else...does that sound right to you guys? Just got a hold of the piece of copper and would appreciate the corraboration before I yank everything apart.
